Letter: The retirement question

Comment on Lynda Wilkerson's article October 9 is Ageism Awareness Day

By Richard Raines

I think a lot of well-intentioned people who we may not have seen in a while will ask something to the effect of "Are you retired?" or "When are you going to retire?" not realizing it is not a welcome question to the person they are asking.

As for me, first I've worked jobs that had retirement plans, but I left for a variety reasons (If I had stayed, I would have been headed to a vacation at Our Lady of Peace, I was considered a "liability more than a asset to the company", or the company, or the one that I really enjoyed went broke because of decisions made by upper level management. One job I liked had a retirement account that the owner contributed to, however it was a small business where the owner couldn't afford to pay for employee health insurance and keep the doors of the open.

Unveiling of the Judge Tom Emberton statue Nov 2

From Kim Harwood, Executive Director
Edmonton Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce

The Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the unveiling of the Judge Tom Emberton statue at 1:30pmCT on Sunday, November 2, 2025, honoring an individual who was a noted leader and stateman serving his country, the commonwealth, and community his entire adult life.

The Emberton statue, created by internationally recognized sculptor and an eighth-generation Kentuckian, Amanda Matthews, is a life-size bronze sculpture capturing Judge Emberton in his judicial robes while holding the Constitution of the United States.

Chief Justice (Ret) Laurance VanMeter once said, "I consider Tom Emberton a great, great man. I have had a number of wonderful mentors in my career who taught me how to be a lawyer and how to be a judge, but I feel like I learned something more from Tom Emberton: how to carry oneself with honor, grace, and dignity...he exemplified the qualities to which all public officials should aspire."

This monument honors a man who continued to touch Metcalfe County and its citizens for over fifty years. The unveiling ceremony will take place at the Tom Emberton Metcalfe County Courthouse in Edmonton, Kentucky, and is open to the public.

October 9 is Ageism Awareness Day

Why should Adair County care and what each of us can do?

By Lynda Wilkerson, Executive Director
The Support Agency

On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Support Agency, I want to bring attention to October 9th, which is Ageism Awareness Day. This day is set aside to recognize how biases about aging show up in society and how to take small, practical steps to address it.

Let me define ageism. Ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) toward others or ourselves based on age. Ageism can apply to younger or older people. Ageism negatively impacts our health and well-being, our financial security and the economy. It exists in many forms, influencing everything from personal interactions to public policy, and impacts us at every age.

What can you do to address ageism?
