Ruby Wheeler Lawhorn, 93, Russell County, KY Ruby Wheeler Lawhorn, of Russell Springs, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Russell County Hospital. She was 93 years, 10 months, and 2 days of age. Ruby was born in Casey County, on November 4, 1931, a daughter of the late Herbert and Maudie Buck Wheeler. Ruby married Paul Lawhorn on September 22, 1951, and two children were born to their union. She was a homemaker and a farmer. Ruby enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Paul. Political party registration is lead by "other" Secretary of State Michael Adams announced voter registration grew in August, with Kentuckians registering under "other" political affiliations outpacing Republican and Democratic registrations combined, for the sixth consecutive month. Hershel Lee Murphy, Sr, 82, Casey County, KY Hershel Lee Murphy, Sr., of Liberty, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was 82. Born on May 31, 1943, in Casey County, Ky, he was a son of the late Arthur and Vera Wall Murphy. He was a retired timber cutter and logger. He was a former custodian for Casey County Middle School, where he worked for 12 years. Hershel attended the 910 Full Gospel Church and enjoyed coon hunting in his younger years. Football: LWU triumphant at Ave Maria Ave Maria, FL - The longest trip in Lindsey Wilson football history turned out to be a triumphant success on Saturday night, September 6, 2025, as the Blue Raiders beat host Ave Maria (FL) 37-3 under the lights at Gyrene Field. The Blue Raiders (2-0) used a dominant defense, an efficient offense, and an explosive special teams to help make the 909-mile trip from the heart of the Lindsey Wilson campus to Ave Maria worthwhile. The Lindsey Wilson defense limited the Gyrenes (0-1) to 212 total yards of offense while surrendering just a late fourth-quarter field goal. The Blue Raider offense tallied 341 yards of offense and nearly seven yards per play. A 90-yard touchdown kickoff return by Byron Kirkland-Lundy highlighted the Lindsey Wilson special teams unit. Reuling Stadium. Dominic Ayella, Milan Diao, Elvis Eddy Mwanje, Paseka Maile, and Denilson Macon all contributed a goal in the shutout. Diao, Juliano Manfro, and Maile all tacked on an assist. Basketball: Breeze weighs in on return as interim head coach By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Adair County athletics has announced that former Indians basketball head coach Deron Breeze will be back for the 2025-2026 season as the interim head coach. This comes after the departure of former head coach Jordan Brangers. I spoke to coach Breeze Friday about his return and he had this to say, "Coach Brangers stepping down after school began and Coach Cundiff deciding to take the girls position, there (was) a need for the boys head coach. I still live here, and don't (plan) to move. Adair County is my home and Mr Faulkner and Mr Maskill have always been great to me, so anything I can do for them I will, and they needed a coach in this situation, so I am more than willing to step in for the season. I have agreed to coach this season, and will see how it goes from here if I decide I want to keep on going, and also if they want me to keep on going." There is of course reason for excitement about a back-to-back-region-championship-winning coach returning, but the roster is still a far cry from what it has been the past two seasons, so I would hold off on the calls for a three peat at least until we see what the team looks like come season.
