Remembering Brenda Dile, she will be missed

By Phillip Coffey

A person whom I have known all of my life, who was born just over a mile from my birthplace and where I was raised, has passed. She lived in the house in her early years. My Brother Roy owns the property where she was born and lived in her early life.

Before I can recall, Brenda and her parents, Harry and Lela Wright Sullivan, moved to a house near Fry, Ky. At that point she lived about 3.5 miles from my family.

Football: Indians host Metcalfe Co. on Friday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians football team is back in action at 7pmCT on Friday, August 29, 2025, as they face off against the Metcalfe County Hornets at their home away from home, Lindsey Wilson University's Parnell Family Stadium, 928 Russell Rd, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available through hometownticketing.com.

The Indians will look to bounce back after a 32-9 loss to the Russell County Lakers last week. The Hornets also had a rough start to the season taking a 27-0 loss to Taylor County.

Against Taylor County, Metcalfe County struggled to move the ball, posting just over 100 yards of total offense. A majority of that came from Senior Quarterback Zach Perdue, who went 8 for 17 passing for 73 yards. Perdue also led the team in rushing, with 28 yards of the teams 30 positive rush yards.

The schedule for the Tribe this year is rather tough, and if they want to post a record above .500 this is a game Adair County will need to win. Come out and support your Indians tommorow as they face the Hornets!

The 2025 Lindsey Wilson football season gets underway at 6pmCT on Thursday night, August 28, 2025, against No. 10-ranked Texas Wesleyan at Parnell Family Stadium, 928 Russell Rd, Columbia, KY.

FAKH to participate in Hunger Action Day Sept 9

From Manda Barger

The latest Map the Meal Gap data from Feeding America reveals another concerning rise in food insecurity across Kentucky's Heartland. In 2023, 188,170 people in Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland's (FAKH) 42-county service area were food insecure, an alarming increase of 11,900 individuals compared to the previous year.

Food insecurity is defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as the lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. The food insecurity rate is more than a number, it's a pressing public health challenge with deep social and medical implications.

"The annual Map the Meal Gap report plays a vital role in directing our efforts here at Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland," said Charles Dennis, Executive Director of FAKH. "It helps us identify the areas of greatest need and allocate resources strategically to address food insecurity throughout the 42 counties we serve.

In Adair County, the data is striking. The overall food insecurity rate is 18.5 percent, meaning one in five residents - totaling 3,530 individuals - lack adequate food. This rate is 4.2 percent higher than the national average. The child food insecurity rate in Adair County stands at 24.2 percent, or about one in four children, affecting 910 kids.

This September, FAKH will join Feeding America and its network of food banks nationwide in shining a spotlight on the issue of hunger through Hunger Action Month. On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, food banks across the country will unite for Hunger Action Day, a day dedicated to inspiring action and raising awareness. FAKH invites everyone to take part by wearing orange, the official color of hunger relief, to show support.

Carol Perkins: Drop the Kleenex

Previous Column: You're on the Air

By Carol Perkins

During lunch with my women friends, we reminisced about our childhood. One grandmother told of teaching her young grandchildren how to play "Simon Says." The conversation evolved into a discussion of all the other fun games we played at recess or at home.

At recess, we girls raced out the door to play London Bridge or jump rope. We slid down the sliding board, twirled on the merry-go-round (minus horses), and when one was empty, ran for the swings.

"Push higher," one would yell. Not me. I went high enough on my own.

The boys chased each other in a game of "freeze" or "you're it" tag, kicked the can, played baseball, or headed for the woods to play Cowboys and Indians.

When we played together, it was Red Rover or drop the handkerchief. One lady said it would be drop the Kleenex now.

Local organizations collaborate to help a veteran

Recently, VFW 6097 members Paul Smith and Joe Hare became aware that veteran Justin Claywell had a pressing need for a ramp at his house. Justin had lost part of his left leg due to diabetes, and is wheelchair bound.

With this in mind, the local VFW and Masonic Lodge joined forces to see what could be quickly accomplished. The Columbia Christian Church Benevolence team, lead by Richard Phelps, also found out about this need. VFW 6097 and Columbia Masonic Lodge 96 agreed to purchase all needed materials for a new ramp, and Columbia Christian Benevolence provided labor for the building of the ramp.

Within 7 days of learning of the need, the ramp was completed, and it has been of great assistance for Justin and his family. Joe Hare says, "All three organizations are very happy and willing to help in any situation that we can. We pray that all goes well for Justin."

Pictured are Paul Smith (Masonic Lodge) and Russell Lunsford (VFW Commander) presenting checks to Richard Phelps (Columbia Christian) for the payment of the materials. With them is Justin with his great attitude and smile.
