Parkway bridge open again westbound in Pulaski Co. Columbia Magazine Senior Transportation Analyst Doug Waggener reports that Westbound Fishing Creek Bridge on the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Expressway in Pulaski County is reopened. Doug says they took down barrier barrels this afternoon, Friday, August 22, 2025. According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 8 officials, the bridge was closed on August 4, 2025, after a routine inspection revealed damage to the bridge deck. For safety, westbound traffic was immediately stopped in the westbound direction. KYTC engineers performed a full inspection of both bridges at the site. No issues were identified on the eastbound structure, which remained open to traffic. Repair plans for the westbound bridge were quickly developed and expedited. With materials secured this week, contractors completed the necessary deck repairs, allowing the bridge to safely reopen to motorists. Grand Jury August 14 indictments On Thursday, August 14, 2025, the Adair County Circuit Court Grand Jury met and handed down indictments against 2 individuals from Columbia and Burkesville, KY. Charges included possession and promoting contraband. NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding. ACSO: one injured in motorcycle/truck collision By Adair County Sheriff Gary Roy On August 21, 2025 The Adair County Sheriffs Office was called out to an injury accident at the intersection of HWY 551 and Holmes Bend Rd, involving a truck and a motorcycle. Preliminary reports indicate that Jared Grant age 27, of Columbia was operating a 2006 Chevrolet truck, crossed the centerline and made contact with a 2005 model Honda motorcycle, being operated by Anthony Curry, age 43, of Columbia. KSP: Road Worker injured in Russell County Kentucky State Police reported a road worker was injured in an accident near the intersection of Highway 55 and Garr Ridge Road Wednesday night. State Police report 63-year-old Tony E. Kerr of Jamestown was operating a Chevy Silverado northbound on Highway 55 a little before 7pmCT when he struck a worker who was flagging traffic in a work zone on the highway. The worker was identified as 35-year-old Travis M. Shaw of Monticello. Rodney Lee Withers, 59, Russell County, KY Rodney Lee Withers, of Russell Springs, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at University of Kentucky Medical Center, in Lexington. He was 59 years of age. Born on September 8, 1965, in Hamilton, Ohio, he was a son of the late Garnett and Lillie Wilson Withers. Rodney was a former employee of Stephens Pipe and Steel. LWU: opening Faculty Assembly celebrates an incredible year By Duane Bonifer After posting "an incredible year" in 2024-25 as the final year as a college, members of the Lindsey Wilson faculty gathered for the first time on Thursday, August 21, under the university banner with the school's "best days still ahead." That was the message Lindsey Wilson University leaders delivered at the 2025-26 school year's opening faculty assembly, held in the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship and online. The gathering -- which included the university's 126 full-time faculty and more than a dozen academic support staff -- also welcomed seven new members to the Lindsey Wilson faculty. "The past year was a really good one for Lindsey Wilson University," said Vice President for Academic Affairs Ray Lutgring. "I'm really excited about the coming academic year." Lindsey Wilson officially became Lindsey Wilson University on July 1, 2025, and on August 22-23, it will welcome returning and new students to the A.P. White Campus who will start fall semester classes on August 25. But August 21 was a full day reserved for faculty to reconnect with colleagues, discuss and examine the myriad of issues facing an evolving higher-education landscape, and look ahead to the school's first school year as a university. Boil Water Advisory issued in Columbia Update: Boil Water Advisory lifted From Columbia/Adair Utilities District Date Issued 8/22/2025, Time Issued 5:00 am A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for consumers on Hurt St., Harvey St., 802-1011 Jamestown St., 705-908 Russell Road. The advisory has been issued due to main line break. Following such an event, the potential exists for bacteriological contamination of the water supply therefore this Boil Water Advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure. Until further notice, boil all water used for drinking and cooking, bringing the water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using. This advisory will remain in effect until the situation has been corrected and test results have shown the water to be of an acceptable quality.
