Thank you to The Barn at Cedar Grove, Amy Mitchum and Sondra Keltner, for hosting us and Brooks Ewing for his sound equipment and the music before our event.

Congratulations to the following Award Winners:

Beautiful combination in Melson Ridge garden

2025-07-27 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Wendy Butler Burt.
Photographer Wendy Butler Burt writes, "I don't often see Giant Swallowtails these days (many Tiger Swallowtails, Zebra Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, etc.), but today I was treated to watching one flit from zinnia to zinnia in my garden. I'm hoping that all our pollinator habitat is helping these disappearing butterflies."

Letter: Please don't relocate raccoons

Donna Rieder writes:
Please don't make your problem raccoon somebody else's problem. If you're having problems with raccoons or other wildlife, you can contact the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife at 800-858-1549, their office closes at 4:30pm.

Wildlife experts agree that it's not recommended or considered humane to relocate a raccoon. Instead, there are things people can do to make their property less attractive to the raccoons. Secure garbage cans, remove potential food sources, and seal entry points. In some cases, gentle harassment, like using strong smells, or sounds, can encourage raccoons to leave on their own.

Relocating a raccoon requires a license from the KY Dept of Fish and Wildlife and transporting and/or holding of wildlife for any reason requires a permit. Prioritizing humane and sustainable methods of managing wildlife conflicts is essential for both the well-being of the animals and the health of the ecosystem.  -- DR

Great Wooded South: Dive Bombing Fire Towers

Click here for all of this Great Wooded South series

By Billy Joe Fudge

Replacing fire towers as the primary fire detection method with airplanes was a gradual process. We thought it would be more cost efficient. We thought it would be more effective in plotting exact fire locations. We were sure it would give more timely and accurate information about fire size, equipment and personnel needed, burning conditions, access routes, etc. We knew there would be negatives as well as positives. So, we wanted to research the pluses and minuses before completely abandoning our fire towers.

The most amazing finding was cost efficiency! The charge of $200 to $300 or more per hour, at first gave me pause. However, there were over 30 towers in our 16 counties which had to be maintained, have radio equipment in each tower and a seasonal employee for each tower that had to be paid for 5 months, regardless of weather. This made airplane fire detection really attractive, since we only had to pay the charges when they were flying.

Fire towers were manned by all sorts of folks. The position was seasonal and the employee usually lived close by. Housewives, subsistence farmers, grandmothers and grandfathers, retirees and a broad range of locals filled those tower spotter positions across the Great Wooded South and beyond.

There were just a few requirements to qualify for the job.

LWU TheatreFest! cast members tour Shiloh Battlefield

From Duane Bonifer

Shiloh, TN - Before they take the stage for the Lindsey Wilson University TheatreFest! production of Shiloh Rules, the cast spent Saturday, July 26 getting closer to the story they will tell July 31 to August 3, 2025, on the stage of V.P. Henry Auditorium.

The play's cast members and the director, Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, spent a good part of the day at Shiloh National Military Park in southwestern Tennessee. They watched a documentary about the pivotal battle that took place on April 6-7, 1862, walked some of the nearly 5,000 acres of the national park and visited several key locations of the battle.

The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, helped turn the tide for the Union in the Civil War's western theatre. Shiloh, which comes from the Hebrew word that means "place of peace," was the bloodiest battle up to that point in the war. Shiloh's casualties of more than 23,000 were more than the combined casualties of all previous American wars up to that point.
