Civil War lives in LWU TheatreFest! production of Shiloh Rules

From Duane Bonifer

The total number of casualties at the Battle of Shiloh was greater than today's combined populations of Columbia, Campbellsville, Greensburg, Jamestown and Russell Springs.

The 23,746 U.S. and Confederate soldiers who were either killed or wounded at the April 6-7, 1862, battle in southwestern Tennessee had been part of what was at that point the bloodiest clash in the nearly 12-month-old American Civil War.

In addition to marking the beginning of the end for the Confederate army in the war's western theatre, the war's first major battle brutally reminded the nation that the conflict between the states was going to be a long, ferocious war that would change the nation.

More than 150 years after that pivotal Civil War battle, another battle will be staged in the Lindsey Wilson University TheatreFest! production of Shiloh Rules, which will be presented July 31-August 3, 2025, at V.P. Henry Auditorium. It is directed by Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, and it will be performed at 7pmCT July 31-Aug 2 and at 2pmCT Aug 3, 2025. To purchase tickets, go to theatrefest.org or contact the Lindsey Wilson Theatre Department at theatre@lindsey.edu or 270-384-8044.

Lindsey Wilson University receives $2M HHS grant

From Duane Bonifer

A $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to Lindsey Wilson University will help meet the mental health needs of Central Appalachia by expanding the number of the region's mental health counselors.

The grant will assist graduate students in the Lindsey Wilson School of Professional Counseling with their practicum and internships, providing a stipend to the students and to the program's community partners. Graduate students in Lindsey Wilson's nationally accredited master of education degree in counseling program are required to log 750 hours in their practicum and internships, which often presents economic challenges to students because most of them work full-time and are family caretakers.

The Lindsey Wilson School of Professional Counseling works with communities in six states, especially in Appalachia, to meet their mental health needs by educating qualified professional mental health counselors to serve their communities.

"This is great news for Lindsey Wilson's nationally ranked graduate program in counseling, but it's even better news for the residents of Central Appalachia because this grant will help meet the mental health needs of their communities," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr.

The $2 million U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant will support 12 Lindsey Wilson graduate students a year. When the grant is completed, it will have helped expand the behavioral health workforce in Kentucky and West Virginia by preparing 48 new clinical mental health counselors, who will be trained to provide integrated behavioral health care, particularly for children, adolescents and young adults.

New football field and track for Adair Co. Schools

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

Adair County Schools has broken ground on a new football field and track on the site of the current stadium. The renovation of the current site will add an 8-lane track, new lighting, and a turf football field. The field itself will be outfitted with alternating shades of Green down the field with the two end-zones displaying "Roll Tribe" and "Adair".

The Indians football team is coming off their most successful season in a decade, and will take the field this season under Head Coach Cross for the first time after the departure of Steve Stonebraker.

The new facility will also provide a home to the Adair County Track team, which lacked a competition level venue, and had been using facilities at Lindsey Wilson University.
