Working to raise awareness about dementia Shared by Pastor Carol Weddle Someone once said if you take care of someone with dementia you lose them more and more everyday. When they get the diagnosis, when they go through different stages, when they need treatment and when they pass away. This is called "ambiguous loss." As the brain slowly dies, they change physically and eventually forget who their loved ones are. They could end up lying in bed, not moving and not eating or drinking. Basketball: Adair County back in action By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Adair County Basketball is back! The Indians travel to Clay County today, Monday, June 2, 2025, to kick off the 2025 Summer ball season. The Tribe will take on Knott County Central at 5pmET and then Bell County at 6pmET, both at Bobby Keith Gymnasium on the campus of Clay County High School, 415 Clay County High Rd, Manchester, KY. (Note: we were unable to confirm game times, due to time zone differences. We've assumed Easter Daylight Time.) These matchups will be a big indicator of where Adair County is after a mass exodus of graduating seniors from last year's squad. The first game against Knott County Central is against a Patriots team that went 19-12 last season and fell in the first round of the 14th region tournament against a Hazard team that went 29-3. The Patriots graduated only 26% of their scoring from last year's post season and they should sport a very strong senior class for this year's squad led by Talan Osborne and Chance Amburgey. The second matchup, against the Bell County Bobcats, features another program coming off a very strong year, going 26-7 last season and going out to South Laurel in the 13th region tournament. The Bobcats also did not graduate a ton of their scoring from last year, only losing 18% of their production from last year's postseason to graduation. Bell County should return last year's sophomore standout Ethan Buell as a junior for this year, slowing down his scoring will be a challenge for Adair County. The Indians JV will play at the same time as varsity, but will be playing their games at Manchester Elementary, 128 Richmond Rd., Manchester, KY. 2025-06-02 12:52:59 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports

Tommy Druen: The cultivation of understanding Previous Column: Words matter By Tommy Druen: Twenty-five years ago, I sat in a chair on Centre College's campus, clad in cap and gown, prepared--but hardly ready--to graduate. For the first time in my life, I was adrift. I had a plan, but no conviction. I was unsure whether the path ahead was mine or simply the one I had chosen because I didn't know what else to choose. Centre, like most colleges, typically invited a prominent figure to deliver the commencement address. That year, however, the graduating class selected one of our own--Dr. Larry Matheny. It was a decision that surprised no one, especially his students. Dr. Matheny was more than a professor; he was an institution. Nearly four decades teaching government, a dry wit as sharp as his intellect, a fondness for gin, and a rumored familiarity with every book in the college library made him a figure of lore. I took eight of his classes during my time at Centre. Technically, I majored in government, but if I'm honest, I majored in Matheny. As I had done so many times before, I listened to him closely.
