Market value of Adair Ag products breaks $100M

From the April Agriculture & Natural Resources Newsletter
Courtesy Nick Roy, Adair Co. Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources

According to the newly released ag census, the economic impact of agriculture boomed in 2022, reaching over $100 million in market value of products sold compared to just $69 million in 2017. Livestock, including poultry, beef, and dairy, increased by $32 million, while grain crops increased by about $4 million.

While the market value of agriculture products increased, both farmland acres and the number of farms decreased by 17% and 7%, respectively. Adair County ranked 2nd in Kentucky for milk sales and 9th for beef sales.

Carol Perkins: Circle the Square

Previous Column: Stay OUT

By Carol Perkins

"Let's go circle the square," one of us would say to the driver before it was time to go home.

We had probably left Gene's Freeze after going to the Strand Theater in town. One more trip around the square was a must. We were sixteen.

I recently laughed at this memory and the fact that it is impossible to circle our square. We had to "square" our square, from the Corner Restaurant, past the Filling Station and around to the old upper bank (PCA building by then), and then cut the corner in front of Butler Funeral Home and pass the old post office (Sharon Howard's office) and down to the corner where the bank sat.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

From Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - In honor of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, Kentucky is driving home a life-saving message for all motorists: Buckle up and put the phone down.

"Safety is a top priority of this administration. So, we're encouraging all Kentuckians to protect themselves by buckling up and putting the phone down when entering a vehicle," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "One life lost on Kentucky roadways due to distracted driving is too many. So, we need to do everything we can to protect ourselves and others on the road when we're driving."

Over the past decade, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of vehicle crashes on our nation's roads. According to KOHS, each year in Kentucky, distracted driving results in more than 50,000 crashes, more than 13,000 injuries and approximately 200 deaths.
