Janie Harlow, 80, Metcalfe County, KY (1942-2023)

Janie Geraldine (Huffman) Harlow, 80, of Edmonton passed away May 4, 2023 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She was born June 6, 1942 to Phil and Ruby (Cassady) Huffman.

She was a member of the Center Church, Cook for the Metcalfe County High School, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was retired from Sumitomo.

Ground broken for six new rental spaces

Keystone Development, LLC from Louisville broke ground Friday in New Columbia for a retail center to be located next to Lee's. The center is anticipated to have rental property available for up to six separate businesses. Mayor Pam Hoots was joined by representatives of local businesses and services in welcoming the Keystone owners to Columbia.

Darlene Jones, 63, Green County, KY (1960-2023)

Darlene Jones of Greensburg, Kentucky, daughter of the late Vernon Howard Pettit, Sr. and Alma Pauline Kelly Pettit, was born on Monday, October 24, 1960 and departed this life on Thursday, May 4, 2023. She was 62 years, 6 months, and 11 days of age.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ, was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Mother's Day brings many memories. Unlike many stories I heard from friends, I had a fairly easy childhood. No spankings, no belts, no fathers who drank all the time or mothers who hit them over the head with a frying pan. I was given the freedom to think and for the most part, do whatever I wanted within boundaries.

One of my favorite things to do was rearrange the furniture. My mother never said a word. I was usually cleaning a particular room when the notion struck me. There wasn't a room that I didn't turn around at least twice a year except for the kitchen. Daddy never knew where the couch or his bed would be when he walked into a room.

I was never given the third degree when I came home from school. There was never any, "What did you learn? Who did you play with? What is so and so doing?" It was more like "What time do you need to be at a game or a practice or a lesson?"

Travel: Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located on the New Mexico border in northwest Texas, about halfway between Midland and El Paso.

According to the National Park Service, Guadalupe Mountains National Park hosts eight of the ten highest peaks in Texas and provides an abundance of outstanding, primitive recreational opportunities and excellent vantage points from which to view the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert landscape.

Graham Waggener visited on a recent trip out west, and shares pictures from his climb to Guadalupe Peak, the highest natural point in Texas.
