Record number of LWC graduates cross the stage during two-day celebration

By Venus Popplewell
LWC Public Relations

When Counseling and Human Development graduate Krystal Clarke was searching for a respected online program to advance her counseling education, Lindsey Wilson College stood out among the crowded options.

"I was looking for online schools that were well-rated with a counseling program and LWC came up as one of the best," said Clark from Bel Air, Maryland, who traveled to Columbia to be part of LWC's commencement ceremony.

Despite attending LWC 100% online, Clarke said it was important for her to take part in LWC's commencement ceremony in person.

"I've had a great experience and the teachers have been wonderfully supportive," said Clarke who participated in the Friday evening ceremony. "I put in the work, I felt like I did a great job and I wanted to have this moment to celebrate it."

Clarke was a member of LWC's largest-ever graduating class in the 120-year history of the liberal arts college. The 117th commencement celebration was held over two days to accommodate the large crowd in Biggers Sports Center.

CFR: Overdue kayakers located after multi-agency search

From Chris Taylor, Chief Executive Director Fire-Rescue-EMS
Campbellsville Fire-Rescue

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue was dispatched Green River (between 2MM and 14MM) for a report of two overdue kayakers at 10:55pmET on May 3, 2023. With nighttime temperatures in the upper 30's, we considered this an urgent request due to hypothermia concerns.

Upon arrival, firefighters interviewed the reporting party, gathering information about the overdue individuals, CTC911 attempted phone trace with cell phone providers, provided a hasty search with FLIR UAV, created area command post/initial planning point (Roachville and Lemons Bend) and staged units at river exit points. This was a multi-jurisdictional response with Green County and Taylor County sharing the river in that area, and Greensburg/Green County Fire responded searching high probability areas in the Penitentiary Bend area.

Tommy Druen: Finding Common Ground

Previous Column: The world will be alright

By Tommy Druen

Over spring break, my family drove to Asheville, North Carolina for an extended weekend trip. Despite having visited the town several times, it always seems like a new place to me. Asheville has experienced a population growth of nearly 30% since 2000, but it's not just that growth that has changed the town. It has also managed to keep its downtown alive and thriving with its high-quality restaurants, stores, museums and arts venues. Additionally, as my 7-year-old daughter noticed, it has an abundance of ice cream shops!

Asheville has really turned into a jewel that many Appalachian communities could use as a case study and emulate. After all, North Carolina's mountains are no prettier than the ones in Kentucky!

While waiting as my wife shopped, my son and I visited several local bookstores, of which Malaprop's Bookstore stood out to me. It was larger than average and offered a wide range of new books. I was looking for the history section to see if there was anything on Western North Carolina specifically when I stumbled upon the current affairs section.
