Wildfire Continues at Natural Bridge State Resort Park From John Mura/Robin Hartman Frankfort, KY - Firefighters from the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF), U.S. Forest Service Daniel Boone National Forest and local fire departments set new containment lines Wednesday in an attempt to control the wildfire that has consumed almost 100 acres at Natural Bridge State Resort Park/Nature Preserve in Slade, Kentucky. The fire, which began late Monday, near the sky bridge platform has not threatened any structures but has forced the closure of all cottages at the park, the Woodland Center, trailheads and parking lots. Access to Mill Creek Lake also is closed to the public. The park lodge remains open, with regular hours. The Red River Gorge Geological Area remains open but visitors are asked to be careful when camping or hiking. Visitors to the area should be aware of possible visibility issues due to smoke from the fire. Campgrounds will be open for campers this weekend. Adair County Clerk closing early on Thursday From Lisa Greer Adair County Clerk Our system that we process vehicle/boat transactions in has been down all day state-wide. Normally, Kentucky Department of Transportation is able to get the system back up and running in a short time. But, we were just informed that the system will not be back up today and working. They have found the problem and will be working over night to correct. Due to this outage and not being able to do anything in our system, we will be closing at 3pm today. Hopefully, tomorrow when we come in everything will be up and going. Just in-case you might want to call before you come in 270-384-2801. KELC releases March 2023 Unemployment Report From Mike Clark/Kim Saylor Brannock Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's seasonally adjusted preliminary March 2023 unemployment rate was 3.8%, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet (KELC). The preliminary March 2023 jobless rate was down 0.1 percentage points from February 2023 and was unchanged from the 3.8% recorded for the state one year ago. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for March 2023 was 3.5%, which was down 0.1 percentage points from February 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Duck Derby 2023 From Tiffany Collins Columbia's second annual Duck Derby will be held at 11amCT on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at McKinney Landing on N. Hwy 55 (behind NAPA). Ducks are $5.00 each. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month By Mary Bardin April is declared Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a month to think about the numerous ways our children may suffer some type of abuse. The abuse may be physical abuse and easily detected as unexplained bruising, broken bones, belt marks. All of these signs might be noticed and reported for further investigation. Sometimes these signs may also go unreported because the child may say it is from falling or other bike wrecks etc. The child may fear telling the actual cause because they have been told what will happen if they tell.
