Recycling: a review of pre-pandemic abilities

Let's revisit Rebecca Montgomery's in depth study of recycling in Adair and surrounding counties to figure out how we can think globally but act locally in our earth care - where were we then, and where are we now after having to shut down the local center? Three articles from her 2020 research follow:

Recycling Part I - what's acceptable, what's not
The Recycling Center, located on Service Road, Columbia - when open - can take paper, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and some plastics, including bottles for detergent, condiments, and drinks - rinsed clean and separated in advance.

Recycling Part II: simple steps make big differences
Simple, easy steps to reduce the amount of waste each of us generate.

Recycling III: If not here, where to take it?
There are other regional drop-off locations for items like glass and styrofoam, that are not accepted by the Adair County Recycling Center. It is important to recycle long-lasting materials like glass, styrofoam, and plastics, because they take hundreds of years to decompose.

Carol Perkins: Fried Chicken Blues

Previous Column: The Trip

By Carol Perkins

In my growing up years, fried chicken for Sunday dinner or supper was as predictable as cold milk and cornbread. If the chicken came from the backyard or chicken house, the preparation was gruesome. When we no longer had chickens, the fryers were bought at the grocery store. There were no individual packages of legs, thighs, breasts, or wings. Homemakers bought a whole chicken and cut it up, rolled it in flour with some salt and pepper, and cooked it in an iron skillet for an hour. That's what my mother did.

Every community had a grocery store with a fresh meat display. The variety was mainly pork chops, a roast, fryers looking like rubber ducks, hamburger meat freshly ground, fresh sausage, and even sandwich meat. The shopper picked the pieces from the display, the butcher wrapped them in white paper, and wrote on top the price. Life was simple and the meat was fresh without unwanted preservatives.

When I started cooking, I thought I had to fry chicken on Sunday.

CU School of Education celebrates hooding and pinning ceremony

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - Dr. Lisa Allen, dean of the School of Education at Campbellsville University, told the candidates for pinning and hooding during the School of Education's pinning and hooding ceremony at Campbellsville Baptist Church they had benefited from a strong support network to get to where they are now.

Allen encouraged them to "seek out those people (family, friends, faculty) who encouraged and helped them along the way after all of the celebration subsided."

She reminded them no one gets to where they are on their own.

Letter: Child advocacy

Mary Bardin writes:
Please become involved in preventing child abuse. Kentucky is still #1 in the nation for child abuse and high addiction rates. Please help bring our numbers down.
One good option is CASA. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of South Central KY, Inc. is a non-profit agency dedicated to preventing and eliminating further trauma to children. CASA provides support, advocacy, and intervention for abused, neglected, and dependent children in South Central Kentucky's Family Court Systems. A CASA volunteer is a court appointed, trained and committed adult who ensures that each child's individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system.

More information and the application form may be found online at www.casaofsck.org/volunteer.

At Thursday's special called meeting, the Columbia City Council approved what will be called "Paint the Town II," a project to assist locally owned businesses with improvements downtown.

A few months ago the City Council voted to use a portion of the ARPA funds (received from the COVID-19 Pandemic support to communities) to invest in locally owned downtown businesses.

Mayor Pam Hoots called on Joe Willis, Mary Beth Phelps and Leon Lewis to study what requirements might me needed and to begin the thought processes on how best to use the funds.

From Dylan Gentry

In honor of Sue Stivers, the Adair County Homemakers are collecting can openers to benefit those in need in Eastern Kentucky. Sue was an excellent supporter of the community, always giving back. In this same spirit, the Adair County Homemakers have determined that flood recovery would be a worthy cause to honor her.

Can openers that can be used easily by senior citizens are preferred. You may call (270) 384-2317 with any questions.
