Neomie Jasper, 96, Russell County, KY (1926-2022)

Neomie Jasper, of Russell Springs, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2022. She was 96 years of age.

Born March, 14, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Dora and Ina Coffey Wilson. Neomie quit school after second grade to work, doing her part in helping provide for a large family of thirteen. At the age of 18, she wed Cecil Jasper on August 24, 1944. They were married for 49 years and raised five children together, before Cecil's passing in 1996. Neomie enjoyed sewing, especially piecing together quilt tops, and raising a garden. She was a member of the Main Street Church of God. Neomie was a person who always stayed busy throughout her life and never failed to keep an "exceptionally" clean house for as long as she was able to do so.

David Morris Yates, 74, Russell County, KY (1947-2022)

David Morris Yates, age 74, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Sunday, June 12 2022 at his residence.

He was the son of Gladys Gorsick Yates, who preceded him in death.

Lemand Rudolph Houk, Jr. of the Mt. Gilead Community, son of the late Lemand Rudolph Houk and Dorthy Pierce Houk, was born on Friday, April 23, 1943 in Green County, Kentucky and departed this life on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 79 years, one month, and 19 days of age.

Employers: Protect workers from heat as temps rise

Frankfort, KY - As temperatures begin to soar in the commonwealth, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet is reminding employers that they have a responsibility to protect employees working in hot conditions.

Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary Jamie Link is urging employers to establish a heat illness prevention plan, closely monitor workers in hot indoor and outdoor environments, and learn how to recognize and treat various heat-related illnesses.

"Employers are responsible for providing safe workplaces free of known hazards, and that includes extreme heat conditions," Link said. "Asking workers to perform physically exhausting work in dangerously hot conditions without providing breaks, water and shade can result in serious illness and even death."

Truck It Up scheduled for July 29

An event started by the City of Columbia four years ago will take place on Friday, July 29, with the fourth annual Truck It Up food truck event. The city will have food trucks parked in the city parking lot directly across from City Hall, in conjunction with Paint The Town.

New resources for Kentuckians fighting addiction

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, June 13, 2022, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that Kentucky is working to establish counties as "Recovery Ready Communities" in an effort to help individuals fighting an addiction receive critical resources at no cost, and work to reduce the ongoing public health crisis that is sweeping across the nation.

This is in response to Gov. Beshear signing House Bill 7 last year, which ensures communities are recovery-ready through the availability of high quality recovery programs offered within their area.

Treatment Resources
  • Call the KY Help Call Center at 833-8KY-HELP (833-859-4357) to speak one-on-one with a specialist who can connect Kentuckians to treatment.

  • Visit findhelpnowky.org to find information about available space in treatment programs and providers based on location, facility type and category of treatment needed.

  • Visit the KSP website to find one of KSP's 16 posts where those suffering from addiction can be paired with a local officer who will assist with locating an appropriate treatment program. The Angel Initiative is completely voluntary, and individuals will not be arrested or charged with any violations if they agree to participate in treatment.

Heat advisory issued through Wednesday

With temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity, heat index values will exceed 100 degrees each afternoon this week. The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued Heat Advisories for today through Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

If you are working outdoors, remember to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and to watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Check on the elderly, sick, and folks without air conditioning.

William Gene (Billy) Spoon, 75, Columbia, KY (1947-2022)

William Gene "Billy" Spoon of Columbia died on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Lexington VA Hospital in Lexington. He was 75 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 3pmCT on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Don Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven Hill Cemetery, with full Military honors provided by VFW Post 6097.

Visitation will be on Wednesday after 10amCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
