Phillip Coffey - Earthen Crust

EARTHEN CRUST, a Memorial Day remembrance by Phillip Coffey

My Father, at rest now peacefully entombed on a pleasant Keltnertown grassy knob overlooking
Land explored by 'many a kin' - Coomer, Coffey, Rogers and Keltner in the last two hundred years or so.
They settled on the forested hills - rocks just beneath the thinly layered liter, some turned upward still.
No more pain of shots ringing out in Dad's memory of youthful march against the Nazi-humbled Huns.

No time today to visit the sacred scene of family and some close friends interred beneath the shining sun.
My thoughts drift back frequently to all those fine people - many who helped shape me into whatever I be.
Prayerfully joining the mourning dove coos in the requiem of souls briefly planted in the dust.
Someday soon I shall join them with other trusted family members buried in the upper earthen crust.

Tornado of April 27, 1971 - a first person account

Coverage of the April 1971 outbreak:
Correction, April 27, 2023: A previous version of this article incorrectly listed the date as April 29, which was the publication date of many news items about the event. The tornado outbreak occurred on April 27, 1971. This is the last in a series of articles covering the tornado of April 27, 1971 from the Columbia Statesman archives; six people lost their lives and a path of destruction was left behind. Click for the previous installment of these stories.

Tornado April 27, 1971: A first person account
By J. Jordan Phelps

A tornado roared through the eastern portion of Russell County Tuesday night, leaving in its wake two dead and almost 40 injured, demolished homes and a swath of dead livestock and farm damage through Salem and Gosser Ridge. At the Avalon Restaurant just south of Russell Springs, lightning flashed as the thunder roared and pealed and the rain resembled "cats and dogs."

Ronald Flatt, 27, and I, drinking coffee by candlelight, joked of "another New York" and the manner in which people got out of bed to light candles and lamps when they, somehow, discovered there was no electrical power. The candle fluttered and almost died as a dripping, windswept arrival clambered through the doorway.

"You know that tornado in Adair County?" he announced excitedly. "Well, it's raisin' cain up Salem right now!"
