Letter: Trash being left every night needs to stop James Roberts writes: I've written about this before and it got better for a while - the amount of trash left overnight by groups hanging out in the IGA parking lot. You would think that their parents would have taught them better manners than this. Apparently not! 2022-06-01 20:27:14 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Farmers urged to sign up for next Ag Census To find out more about the Census of Agriculture, go to nass.usda.gov/AgCensus By Kirk Hilbrecht Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles is encouraging all agriculture producers to stand up and be counted in the 2022 Census of Agriculture. The last day to sign up for this year's Census is June 30. The Census of Agriculture, conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. Taken only once every five years, the Census looks at land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income, and expenditures. "Whether you're a large-scale operation or a small family farm, we want you to have a voice and be counted," Commissioner Quarles said. "Kentucky is still very much an agricultural-based state and the Ag Census creates opportunities for the agricultural sector. Being counted allows you to have a voice about the future of agriculture and our state." Adair Co. Fiscal Court grant award announcement By Gale B. Cowan Adair County Judge Executive I'm pleased to announce that over the holiday weekend, I received notification via email that the Adair County Fiscal Court will be receiving $65,300 in grant funding to go towards the poured-in-place surface portion of the new playground that will be installed at the Jim Blair Recreation Center. I was very hopeful we would receive some funding to go towards this cost, but I was surprised we received as much as we did. I want to thank everyone who wrote letters of support for the grant and to the Kentucky Division of Waste Management and Lisa Evans, Grants Administrator for the Recycling & Local Assistance Branch. Now, hopefully this will give us enough reserve to add the much needed fence to this project. The grants are from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, established by the 1998 Kentucky General Assembly to receive a $2 fee from each retail sale of a new tire in the state. The fund helps manage the approximately 5 million scrap tires generated in Kentucky each year and promotes the development of markets for recycled tire products. 2022-06-01 10:47:01 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local Government

Tommy Druen: Lack of Community Previous Column: Be excellent to each other By Tommy Druen Typically, I try to keep this column decently lighthearted. I may talk about overriding cultural issues, but I avoid the most contentious. The main reason for that is there is enough in our world that seeks to drive wedges between people already. There is a whole industry dedicated to nothing but division and derision, and those who engage in it profit nicely. However, as I picked up my two elementary school children from their last day of school, I wasn't feeling lighthearted. As I attended my son's fifth grade graduation, I wasn't feeling the joy that I should have. Yes, I was happy, but I was also flooded with moments of guilt and sobriety. Over a thousand miles away, I knew there were nineteen fathers who would never get to attend their child's fifth grade graduation, never again pick up their child on the last day of school, never again hug them, hold them, or love them the same way again.
