Tornado April 27, 1971: Six lost their lives in Adair County Coverage of the April 1971 outbreak:
Correction, April 27, 2023: A previous version of this article incorrectly listed the date as April 29, which was the publication date of many news items about the event. The tornado outbreak occurred on April 27, 1971. Coverage of the tornado of April 27, 1971 from the Columbia Statesman archives; six people lost their lives and a path of destruction was left behind. Click for the First installment of these stories. Storm Claims six Adair County lives; Adair hardest hit in human suffering By Pete Walker Near the Mt. Pleasant Church on the Holmes Bend Road, the storm claimed three victims, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Smith and Mrs. Hershel Cundiff. Mrs. Cundiff, recently widowed, was staying overnight in the Smith home. The house was completely demolished by the winds. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Cundiff were killed and Mr. Smith died a short time after rescuers had taken him to a hospital. Mrs. Cundiff's home, a few hundred feet away, withstood the ravages of the storm. Softball: LWC punches ticket to MSC Tournament final site The No. 15-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team punched their ticket to the Mid-South Conference Tournament final site Friday afternoon with their second straight win over Thomas More (KY) at Sparks Park. The Blue Raiders claimed the series sweep with a 2-0 win over the Saints after picking up a 3-0 win during yesterday's contest. "Are you watching Tiger?" On Sunday night, I call. "Which idol did the best tonight?" She calls. "When is my beauty shop appointment?" I call. "What kind of stitches do I use on this quilt?" She calls. "Can you find someone to fix my carport before it falls down?" I call. "I think we need to meet Martha (her sister) in Elizabethtown soon. We haven't seen her in a few years." CPD: Collision result of impaired driving By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO Columbia Police Department On Friday afternoon, April 29, officers were dispatched to a two vehicle collision on Campbellsville Street near the intersection of Fairground Street. Upon arrival, witnesses stated to officers that they had been behind one vehicle involved, a white Chevy Traverse, on Highway 55, and stated it had been repeatedly all over the road and driving recklessly before the accident coming into town. Officers were able to review video from a local business on Campbellsville Street and observed the Traverse veer into the southbound lane before making contact with a private bus from Somerset Christian School, which was occupied by nine juveniles as well as the driver. Officers performed onsite field sobriety tests on male subject who was operating the Traverse. They also located a substance believed to be methamphetamine on the male's person. In addition, the subject had seven active warrants from Pulaski and Lincoln Counties.
