Saying goodbye to Bea Beard

2022-03-04 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Beautiful spring-like March 4, 2022. Normal busyness of a Friday afternoon in downtown Columbia. The Baptist Church noonday chimes are playing All is Well With My Soul. And in the Methodist Church a block away, family and friends prepare to say goodbye to Beatrice Coomer Beard.

Bea Coomer Beard was part of historic family business

Before the family business was sold it was featured in the paper with this headline, "Myrtle Coomer operates town's oldest business" - it is shared by Bea Beard's son Doug from his archives.

By Paul Barry Hayes

"The town just wouldn't be the same without them," one long-time customer said recently, referring to Myrtle Coomer and her two daughters, Bernice and Bea, the owners and operators of Coomer's Cafe. Myrtle Coomer opened the doors to Coomer's Cafe for the first time on June 25, 1943, over 38 years ago, making the restaurant the oldest business onthe square that has been operated by the same people.

Letter: Mike Watson story connects to Texas family

Karla McDonald Jones writes:
Hello Linda, I'm writing to you from Texas! There is an article in Columbia Magazine, the date is listed Veterans Day, 2011. It is titled "Adair Countians and the War for Texas Independence 1836". The article is written by Mike Watson. He gives a very interesting story. A call was made for volunteers in Adair County on 29 July 1836; for volunteers to go to Texas. The article states that 78 men answered that call.

Allen D Patterson was elected captain of the company, and Henry Moore was to act as 1st Lieut. There is a list of 48 of the 78 men who volunteered, he says that the other names are lost. However, one of the 48 listed is my 3rd Great Grandfather, Joseph Grider.

I am looking for deeper, further information on this article. Were there actual militia muster rolls? Is there any documentation, or any kind of a paper trail that details this happening? Articles from July 29, 1836? Do ya'll have an archives in Adair County? I am looking for articles, documentation, muster lists/rolls, further information about this happening.

I have many ancestors from Adair, Russell and surrounding counties. I was planning a trip to come visit and do some Family History Research, and then Covid hit. So I haven't made it to visit yet.....I have been conducting Family Research for 30+ years. Thank You for any help or direction you can give me. - Sincerely, Karla
Karla McDonald Jones, (903) 806-3865, kmcgilmer@yahoo.com
Thank you for your letter to Columbia Magazine, Karla! We have an excellent new History and Genealogy Center where you can work directly with writer/historian Mike Watson and others to dig as deeply as you wish into family history from Adair, Russell and surrounding County family information. Hope to meet you when you visit! - LW

FBLA students heading for state competition

By JR Thompson

Adair County High School students in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) traveled to WKU this week to compete at our annual regional competition.

This phenomenal group of young men and women represented our high school and district in the most distinguished manner. To say, as their teacher and adviser, that I'm impressed and proud - would be an understatement.

We had six students place in the TOP THREE thus have received the invitation to compete at the state level in Louisville in April.
