LWC United Nations Club organizes trip to Frozen Niagara

By Anna Peterson

On Saturday, January 29, 2022, the LWC United Nations Club toured the Frozen Niagara Cave at Mammoth Cave National Park. Members of the club, along with ISP Graduate Assistant and UNC Student Advisor Dakota Smith, were allowed deep into the cave and learned fascinating information about the history of the Frozen Niagara Cave as well as Mammoth Cave as a whole from the park's tour guides.

This is the first UNC-sponsored event of the semester, but there are many more to come, including partnerships with other clubs, movie nights, and even fitness classes.

The United Nations Club is for both domestic and international students and is a great place to get together and participate in activities, learn about other cultures, and connect with other students. The UNC President, Faith Kirabo, is typically the person who plans activities, meetings, and relays information to the members. Last semester, UNC elected new officers, who organized and attended the Mammoth Cave trip over the weekend. Anna Kelly, from Ireland, serves as Vice President and Hanako Nakamura, from Japan, serves as Secretary.

If you are interested in joining UNC, or supporting the club, please email Faith Kirabo and faith.kirabo@lindsey.edu.

Flood Watch and Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 6amCT on Thursday to 6amCT on Friday for Adair, Cumberland, Metcalfe, and Russell Counties. Freezing rain with ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch are expected at some point, as a large winter weather system brings cooling air to the region. Some minor accumulations of sleet and snow are also possible.

As temperatures drop, watch out for slippery road conditions. Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling. Significant icing is expected across portions of Kentucky mainly north of the Cumberland Parkway. A State of Emergency has been declared, and the storm is expected to create difficult travel conditions on major interstates.

In addition, the National Weather Service in Louisville is advising that flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible from Thursday morning through late Thursday night. Rainfall amounts of 2.5 to 3.5 inches with locally higher amounts will be possible in portions of south central Kentucky, including Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Metcalfe, and Russell Counties.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

LWC Athletics celebrates National Girls & Women in Sports Day

By Kyle Jackson

The Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Department and all the Blue Raiders sports programs are excited to support the 36th year of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), to take place this year on Wednesday, February 2, 2022. The Blue Raiders fully support women's sports, and the multiple roles women play in running an athletic department.

"I've been honoring National Girls and Women in Sports Day since my sophomore year of college. It continues to be an important day in my life because it celebrates the evolution of women's competitive athletics in the United States," Alicia Kemnitz LWC Senior Women's Leader and Head Swim Coach said. "This day brings the past and present together, paying homage to all the female athletes who have come before us---those who struggled and fought for recognition and respect.

"Female athletes of my generation and those who I coach today stand on the shoulders of women who refused to back down--of women who played because of their passion and love for sports and this fight for equality and respect continues," Kemnitz added. "I am proud to be part of an athletic department that is taking the time to acknowledge the importance of National Girls & Women in Sports Day. I am proud of all of our female athletes who work hard in their chosen sports and prove, day in and day out, that women belong in the athletic arena."

ACSO: Columbia couple arrested on theft of animal charges

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at around 10:30am, the Adair County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of a missing dog from Waterworks Street in the limits of Columbia. The dog's owner advised that she felt the dog had been taken on the previous day.

After investigating the incident, Sheriff Brockman found evidence to support the assertion that the dog had been stolen.

At approximately 4pmCT, the investigation led Brockman to T and C apartments on Russell Road. The dog, an "Aussiedoodle," was located at an apartment. While Sheriff Brockman was securing the dog in a police vehicle to keep it from running into the roadway, a suspect took off and a foot pursuit ensued.

The suspect was caught near Jamestown Street in the parking lot of KY Department of Family services, and taken into custody by Sheriff Brockman and CPD Officer Josh Durbin.

Two arrests resulted from the investigation, and both individuals were lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail. The dog was returned home safely to its owners.

Groundhog Day weather prediction

Folklore has it that if a groundhog comes out of his hole to see his shadow we will have six more weeks of winter weather.

No shadow, spring arrives early. That's what old timers said.

Since February second is half way between winter solstice and spring equinox, no matter what the groundhog says, it's probably 50/50 either way, right?
