County offices closed for Veterans Day

Soccer: LWC Women prepare for matchup with Cumberlands

The No. 11-ranked and No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team continue their postseason run battling No. 18 and No. 6-seed Cumberlands (KY) on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. The match will be held at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, KY at 2:30pmCT.

The Blue Raiders (12-3, 10-1 MSC) defeated Thomas More (KY) 4-0 in the Mid-South Conference quarterfinals.

Soccer: LWC Men to face Bethel in MSC Semifinals

The No. 11-ranked and top-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team will continue post-season play on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, with a semifinal match against No. 4-seed Bethel (TN) in the Mid-South Conference tournament. Kickoff is set for 5pmCT in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Blue Raiders (12-2-1, 10-1 MSC) enter tomorrow's game after defeating No. 8-seed Georgetown (KY) 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal encounter at Walter S. Reuling Stadium. Nathaniel Opoku's late goal in the 88th minute sealed the victory for the Blue Raiders.

Gary D. Marvin, 81, Russell Springs, KY (1940-2021)

Gary Dean Marvin of Russell Springs passed away Monday, November 8, 2021, at Russell County Hospital. He was 81 years old.

Viewing will be at the Bernard Funeral Home located 367 N. Main Street, Russell Springs, KY on Saturday, November 13, 2021, beginning at 11:30amCT, and ending with a small service at 12:30pmCT, presided over by Pastor Christian Naylor.

At Gary's request, cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be buried next to Susan and Tanya in West Branch, Michigan.

Grants for farmer-appreciation projects available at KDA

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) is focusing its newest effort on the mental health of the state's agriculture community by providing a number of grant opportunities to groups that create and conduct local projects to show appreciation for farmers and farm families.

Applications are due to agr.marketing@ky.gov by Dec. 10, 2021. Groups interested in applying for a grant, can find more information and the documents to apply at https://www.kyagr.com/marketing/farmer-appreciation-grant.html.

The proposed projects will be reviewed by a committee with direct knowledge of the proposed program content through personal operations, education and/or on-the-job field experience, and select the recipients.

A total of $75,000 of the overall funds is available for small grants, up to $5,000 each, to be awarded to create and conduct local farmer-appreciation projects. The awarded projects will support community-based farmer appreciation programs that will promote the many contributions of farmer and their families and to appreciate the various challenges farmers face working in agriculture.

Boil Water Advisory lifted for Bomar Heights/Tutt St. area

As of 1:50pmCT on November 9, 2021, the Boil Water Advisory for customers on Bomar Heights, Tutt Street and all side roads north of Tutt Street has been lifted by the Division of Water Columbia office. This means your water is safe for human consumption. You no longer have to boil your water.

LWC Football remains No. 1 in latest Coaches Poll

The Lindsey Wilson football team (9-0, 6-0 MSC Bluegrass Division) remained at the top of the rankings for the ninth consecutive week in the latest NAIA Football FirstDown PlayBook Top-25 poll, officials at the national office announced on Monday.

The Blue Raiders received 444 voting points and 18 first-place votes in the poll.

Norma Jean Taylor, 86, Columbia, KY (1935-2021)

Norma Jean (Martin) Taylor of Columbia passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021 at her home. She was 86 years old.

Cremation has been chosen, and no public visitation or funeral will be held.

Alexander Keith Gupton, 26, Taylor County, KY (1995-2021)

Alexander "Alex" Keith Gupton, 26, of Campbellsville, KY was born on April 7, 1995, in Hardin County and departed this life on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at his home in Campbellsville.

Alex was a 2013 graduate of Taylor County High School. He started playing football at 5 years old and proudly wore #25 football jersey for the Taylor County Cardinals where he played many positions throughout his high school career. He was an avid UK and Colts fan. He enjoyed hunting, working, and loved his family.

Michael James Holt, 39, Russell County, KY (1982-2021)

Michael James Holt, of Windsor, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021, at his home. He was 39.

Born June 13, 1982, in Somerset, KY, he was the son of Mark and Teresa Murphy Holt. Michael formerly worked for Tarter Industries. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Hood Lodge 839 Annual Deer Hunters Breakfast is Saturday

Hood Lodge 839 will be having their annual Deer Hunters Breakfast this Saturday, November 13, 2021, from 6amCT to 11amCT at the lodge.

We'll be having sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, ham, milk and juice, coffee. Donations only. All proceeds go to ACMS Hoverboard Project to promote attendance and upkeep of the lodge.

Columbia drive-through Christmas event update

The City of Columbia is planning their 2nd annual drive-through Christmas. Last year's event, held at the Little League Park on Joe Johnson Road, was a success for the community.

If your organization, church, group, business, or family would like to do a display, please contact the Mayor's Office at 270-384-6183.

In addition, Bloomington Chapel Church will be doing their live Nativity scene; tentatively scheduled on Friday and Saturday, December 17 and 18.

A mailbox for letters to Santa Claus is being planned for the park. Any child that puts their name and address on the envelope will be responded to.

Governor: COVID-19 Vaccine for Children Ages 5 to 11

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, November 8, 2021, Gov. Andy Beshear said now that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially recommended the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, Kentucky parents and caregivers are now able to book an appointment for their children. Gov. Beshear said his 11-year-old daughter received the first dose of the vaccine today.

To find an available appointment for this age group, visit vaccines.gov and click on "Find COVID-19 Vaccines." From there, parents and caregivers can sort by zip code and vaccine options.

The Pfizer vaccine has been found to be over 90 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 in this age group.

Dr. Joseph Hopkins selected as 12th president of CU

Dr. Joseph "Joe" Hopkins, dean of the School of Arts at Samford University, has been elected 12th president in the 115 years of Campbellsville University, effective Feb. 1, 2022.

Campbellsville University's Board of Trustees voted to elect Hopkins on November 8, 2021, and the Campbellsville University employees, staff and students will meet the president-elect on Tuesday, November 9, in a special called meeting in Ransdell Chapel.

Of today's 84 reported cases, 74 (88%) were unvaccinated and 24 of today's cases (29%) were in individuals 18 years of age or younger. Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting the vaccine if you are eligible and haven't, and wear a mask when in indoor settings where there are large crowds.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 5.44%.

Tonight skies will gradually become mostly clear, with an overnight low around 43F and southwest wind 3 to 6 mph.

Wednesday will be sunny, with a high near 69F and calm wind becoming south around 6 mph.
