Phyllis Wethington, 72, Casey County, KY (1949-2021)

Phyllis Wethington, age, 72, of Liberty, KY passed away on Tuesday October 26, 2021, at her residence. She was born July 12, 1949, in Casey Co., KY, a daughter of the late Elvie Leslie Lee and Mary Etta Wethington Lee.

She was the widow of Lawrence "Runt" Wethington who passed away on July 10, 2009 and she was a housewife.

Trick or treating starts with LWC Friday, more events Saturday

Remember to watch out for trick-or-treaters Friday and Saturday in Columbia, especially during evening hours, as two big events will be taking place:
  • Lindsey Wilson College's Drive-Thru Safe Halloween will kick off from 5pmCT to 8pmCT tonight, Friday, October 29, 2021. Cars will enter campus on Spickard Drive, off of Highway 206 in Columbia. Children will enjoy the festive music and the campus will be adorned with spooky, and some not-so-spooky, Halloween decorations. Lindsey Wilson students will be dressed as popular children's characters and LWC athletes will be in uniform. Students will wear gloves for safety precautions.Click here for full details.

  • The 2021 Adair County Drive Thru Trick or Treat Extravaganza will take place between 4pmCT and 7pmCT on Saturday, October 30, 2021. Click here for a list of locations.

  • The official city hours for trick or treating are also 4pmCT and 7pmCT on Saturday, October 30, 2021. Children and parents will be stopping often with many also walking the streets throughout the evening.

ACES Conservation Poster Winners announced

Winners of the Jim Claypool Conservation Art Poster Contest at Adair County Elementary School have been announced. There were SO MANY great posters this year. I am so proud of the number of students who participated this year and learned about the importance of Kentucky's water supply. The judges sure had some tough decisions to make!

The winners at Adair County Elementary School are:
  • Addilyn Garcia Addilyn's poster won first place. Addilyn is a third grader in Mrs. Wade's homeroom.

  • Braylen Bolom Braylen's poster won second place. Braylen is a third grader also in Mrs. Wade's homeroom.

  • Ellie Staten Ellie's poster won third place. Ellie is a fourth grader in Mrs. Grant's homeroom.
These posters will go on to compete at the regional level.

Wells to retire as LWC Soccer Coach

Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer head coach Ray Wells announced today that he will retire following the 2021-22 academic year.

Wells is the only head coach in Lindsey Wilson men's soccer history, creating the program from scratch in 1990.

"Every year since 1978, I've been a part of a college season either as a player, an assistant coach, or a head coach," Wells said. "It has been part of life for much of my life so I'm going to stay involved in some capacity. My passion for the game will always be with me."

"There have been highs and lows (during his coaching career)," Wells added. "But being able to translate your passion into your career, for me, I don't see how I can be any luckier."

Football: LWC to face No. 22 Bethel in Top-25 conference clash

The No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team will play their second consecutive road game of the season when they travel to take on No. 22-ranked Bethel (TN) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30pmCT at Wildcat Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (7-0, 4-0 MSC) enter the game after securing the program's 100th win with a 31-0 victory over Pikeville (KY) last week. Head Coach Chris Oliver also celebrated 100 coaching wins in the victory.

KYTC: Motorists encouraged to be safe this Halloween

Frankfort, KY - This Halloween, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind motorists that "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving" and to celebrate responsibly.

"As we make strides to experience a sense of normalcy in light of the pandemic, I want to encourage Kentuckians to celebrate Halloween safely by following health guidelines and making plans for a sober ride home if you plan to drink," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "A few preventive measures can mean the difference between life and death."

David R. Swords, Russell County, KY (1931-2021)

David R. Swords, of Jamestown, KY, passed away after a short illness, October 27, 2021. He was born in Akron, OH on July 7, 1931, a son of the late Martha Griffith and Leo Swords.

David was a golf pro at Lost Creek Country Club, in Lima, OH. 1952-1953, the club pro at Wapakoneta Country Club, in Wapakoneta, OH., 1953-1959, was called to the ministry in 1959 attended Gulf Coast Bible College in Houston, TX, 1959-1964. Pastored churches in Reedsburg, WI., Battle Creek, MI., Campbellsville, KY., Ronceverte, and Kenova, W.VA., and Selma, NC.

Cumberland tied for lowest unemployment in KY in September

Frankfort, KY - Unemployment rates rose in two Kentucky counties between September 2020 and September 2021, fell in 116, and stayed the same in two, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Locally, unemployment rates were down year-to-year in Adair and all surrounding counties. Compared to the previous month, unemployment was lower in Adair, stayed the same in Casey, Cumberland, and Russell Counties, and ticked up slightly in Green, Metcalfe, and Taylor Counties.

Greg Nolley, 55, Campbellsville, KY (1966-2021)

Greg Nolley of Campbellsville passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 in Lexington. He was 55 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 11amET on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home, 418 Lebanon Ave., Campbellsville, KY, officiated by Bro. Chad Spencer and Bro. Steve Lee. Burial will follow in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

CU Mass Communication Center dedicated with ribbon cutting

Campbellsville, KY - Faculty, staff and students of Campbellsville University gathered for a ribbon cutting at CU's new Mass Communication Center earlier this month.

Jeannie Clark, assistant professor of broadcasting and director of broadcast services, summed up the goal of the new Mass Communication Center as student focused. "Our goal is to provide practical applications for students so they're able to find careers and employment in the industry post-graduation," Clark said at the ceremony held on Friday, October 8, 2021.

"We've built this facility with that in mind. We've tried very hard to keep students first, no matter what, so we can make sure we are providing the service we were meant to be."

Tyson Foods announces BG manufacturing facility

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, October 28, 2021, Gov. Andy Beshear announced one of the largest investment and job-creation projects and the single largest investment in a new facility in Bowling Green, as Tyson Foods moved forward with plans for a $355 million manufacturing operation, which will create 450 full-time jobs.

"Today, I am proud to announce one of the largest investments in Warren County's history, and this is a community that has had no shortage of economic success in recent years," Gov. Beshear said. "Tyson Foods has a longstanding presence in the commonwealth, and its leaders' vision for the future will make the company a great fit for Bowling Green and the surrounding region."

The company will build a 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Kentucky Transpark for production of Jimmy Dean and Wright Brand bacon. Company leaders anticipate construction will be complete in late 2023.

Soccer: LWC caps off Senior Day with win over Campbellsville

The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team defeated Campbellsville University 5-1 Thursday evening to cap off a senior day to remember.

Nathaniel Onyina Opoku had a game scoring two goals in the victory pushing his total to 14 goals on the season while Cyrus Harmon picked up two assists putting him at six assists on the season. Amin Fernouchi, David Ibrahimkadic, and Monwabisi Mngqibisa all found their names on the score sheet with Alexander Koziolek, Moussa Gueye, Alvaro Verwey, and Victor Cavalcante all had assists in the match.

The Blue Raiders (11-2-1, 10-1 MSC) complete the regular season with the victory and will take the top-seed in the upcoming Mid-South Conference Tournament.

Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting the vaccine if you are eligible and haven't, and wear a mask when in indoor settings where there are large crowds.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 5.17%.

CPD: Bowling Green woman arrested on drug charges

The Columbia Police Department received a reckless driver complaint on Thursday morning, October 28, 2021, on HWY 55 North, southbound coming into Columbia. Visual contact was made with the vehicle on Veterans Memorial Bypass, and a traffic stop was initiated.

The female operator of the vehicle initially refused to allow the officer to search the vehicle, and K9 Unit Annie was utilized, having been provided to City by the Adair County School Board. K9 alerted on the vehicle, and, after subsequent search, officers located several narcotics, paraphernalia, cash and suspected marijuana and methamphetamine.
