Phillip Coffey - The Great Conclusion

By Phillip Coffey
Methuselah was mighty old when he finally passed
969 - what a huge assembly of candles on his big cake
'Brush pile in Northern California'- in excess of 120 Menorah
Grandpa to Noah - took great flood to put it out

'Taking on' another circle around the enormous fire - the sun
Trips seemingly getting quicker - but I don't really mind
Bumps, swampy depressions in the pathways - led through it, somehow
Best years in my life, forward - to the ultimate, grand conclusion.

Letter: Spider identification

Roger Lacy writes:
The attached weblink would appear to identify this as the Black and Yellow Garden Spider, a common species in the U.S. The information in the article says that while this spider may look intimidating, it is harmless to humans. I hope this helps.

Letter: Has visited Brawner-Smith Cemetery

Genna Vinson Twomey writes:
I have been to the Brawner Smith Cemetery. Larry & Elanor Brawner from Elizabethtown took me there. They saw the cemetery last Spring (2021) and the stones were in the ground. Are they still there?

Wyatt Smith 1803-1854 set aside 1 acre for a cemetery. He was married to Elizabeth Brawner 1804-1863.

John Brawner 1863-1843 and his wife Ann 1765-1852 are probably buried there. They had a large farm on Liberty Road KY 206. Ann Brawner lived with Wyatt Smith & Elizabeth Brawner according to 1850 census when she died. Ann was Elizabeth's mother.

Note: We found some other replies to the original inquiry, and updated the article with links. Especially useful is this one from Edwin Rogers, which includes several photos: Brawner-Smith Cemetery is off Pelly Lane on Linda Taylor farm.

Four miles to Columbia: a long ago journey recalled

By JIM

Imagine, if you will -- if you can -- a trip from near Burkesville to Columbia taking all day.

In January 1930, the Adair County News published a long article by H.C. Baker, then just days past his 89th birthday. Judge Baker, born and reared some two and a half miles south of Burkesville in the Horse Shoe Bend section of Cumberland County, became a citizen of Columbia in 1855 after his mother passed, his father having died several years earlier.

However, he had been to Columbia once before, an event he recalled with little fondness nearly eighty years later:
