Phillip Coffey: Humble

HUMBLE -- By Phillip Coffey
Heeding not the limelight, finally- he fell to his knees.
Lord have mercy - years of doing all that I well please.
Strutting around with pleasure - dominating, red rooster I be
Greedy and thoughtless to others- indifference to your plea.

The view of the window to Heaven - hazy opaque it still seems.
Give me the wisdom of Solomon - for me much is not well.
Clearing my 'forward' vision - to what the humble freely see.
To share in the glory of the multitude that are truly set free.

Covid-positive person at Tuesday Fiscal Court meeting

By Gale B. Cowan
Adair County Judge Executive

It has come to our attention this afternoon, Friday, August 13, 2021, that an attendee of Tuesday's Adair County Fiscal Court meeting has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

We have been in contact with the Adair Co. Health Department and anyone we feel was within 6 ft of this person, we have tried to notify directly and should quarantine for 7 days with no symptoms.

You would be allowed to return to normal activity on Tuesday with no symptoms and a negative test on Sunday or Monday of next week.

If you have been fully vaccinated, you are not required to quarantine as long as you show no symptoms.

It is highly recommended that anyone who attended the meeting watch for symptoms and use all precautions necessary to keep family and friends safe.

By Amber Hale

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 Office advises motorists that the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Expressway at the Fishing Creek bridge (mile point 84.4) in Pulaski County will be temporarily reduced to one lane next week as crews perform routine bridge inspections.

The lane closures will be in place starting Monday, Aug. 16 and are expected to be complete Friday, Aug. 20. Crews will be conducting inspections both east and west bound having only one direction reduced to a single lane at a time.

The dates and duration of the lane closures may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra time in reaching their destination.

Commentary: Build a Wall

By an Adair County resident (name on file)

That phrase was associated with building a border wall two elections ago, and many supported that plan. But have you considered how important it is to build a wall against the Covid Virus? The only way we will defeat the virus is to build a solid wall of vaccinated persons. The vaccination rate for Adair County has hovered between 29% of eligible persons, up slightly to just under 31% in the most recent Lake Cumberland Health District Report. That is an improvement, but is a long way from a solid wall.

To defeat the Covid virus and its variations, we need a solid wall, an impenetrable wall, but with vaccination rates as low as they have been, the virus will only get through the wall and become stronger. And that is what has been happening with the new Delta variant. Case numbers are going up and hospital beds are filling up, with a growing number of children testing positive.

I urge all residents of Adair County to get vaccinated. That is the only way we will defeat the virus. Gaps in the wall will only let the virus get stronger.

For whatever reasons you have for not getting vaccinated, please reconsider, and do your part for your town, county, and country in the war against the Covid virus by helping to build a solid wall against the Covid and its variations. Building a wall of vaccinated persons is essential to defeating the virus.

Letter: Armadillos becoming common in KY

Marie Freeman writes:
Yes because of the warming and milder winters armadillo are here. Someone said they saw one dead at tractor supply parking lot a few months back. I did some research. I was shocked to find how much disease they carry.

They are not to be handled if it all possible. They can carry rabies, leprosy, tapeworm, Chagas disease. They do not make good pets! And please don't eat them! Believe it or not some do. They are not a welcome varmint in my opinion. If you encounter one and startle they can jump straight up 2 to 4 feet. (More at bgdailynews.com)

Letter: Armadillos in Kentucky?

Susan Rarey writes:
Tonight around 9 o'clock I was coming home from my brother's house and had just gotten on 704 headed towards Fairplay. I saw an animal in the road so I slowed down. I first thought it was a 'possum, but I was able to safely come to a full stop. I put my brights on and it was actually an armadillo. I even got out of my van for a closer look. It was indeed an armadillo.

I shooed it off and last I saw it, it was headed up towards Dr. Grant's house. Had it been light, I would've snapped a picture. I was surprised to see that we have armadillos in Kentucky. Has anyone else seen one?
