Phillip Coffey - Moment of grieving

MOMENT OF GRIEVING By Phillip Coffey
Dedicated to Lucian Grant "Peanut" McKinley (April 14, 1928-March 20, 2012)

"Parched corn guts, you" was often said to my late Father
By his not too distant kin - peeking from under the front porch.
Not sure what it means but probably up there with dried fodder.
Confident no "Futures" proscribed on the Chicago Stock Market.

Sure were a lot of funny and so very sad stories shared
By those who survived "The "Depression" and World War II.
From "The Greatest Generation" - Heroes, Goats and 'in between'.
Knew some of each I think - still must have a 'moment of grieving'.

By Amy Tomlinson

We added the same number of new cases today as for the same time period last week. Therefore, our 7-day average incidence rate remained constant. Our 7-day average incidence chart is now showing 1 county in the "green-on-track" range, Clinton; 5 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Adair, Cumberland, Green, Russell, and Wayne; and 4 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Casey, McCreary, Pulaski, and Taylor. We are thankful to not have any "red-critical" counties now. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data.

Governor: Positivity rate ticks back up

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced a 3.33% COVID-19 positivity rate and 782 new COVID-19 cases.

"While not a drastic change, today's increase in the positivity rate is concerning," said Gov. Beshear. "This is why it's so important for Kentuckians to help us meet our Team Kentucky Vaccination Challenge and reach our 2.5 million vaccine goal. The sooner we meet this goal, the sooner we can lift many restrictions on most venues and businesses. With over 1.6 million Kentuckians already vaccinated, we need everyone to help us meet our goal, including those who will directly benefit: for example, bars, restaurants, music venues, funeral homes, retail, event spaces, wedding venues, public pools, grocery stores, country clubs, museums, festivals and distilleries."

Case Information
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, Gov. Beshear reported the following COVID-19 numbers:

Letter: Loved working with Jennell

Joni Jessie writes:
Oh my gosh. I loved working with Jenelle at KMart. I worked from 1997 until I started full time teaching job in 2004. She has such a gentle spirit and never had a cross word to say to or about anyone. Up until the store closed, if I was shopping she would always ask about my family and we had such a good time catching up on "old times."

Bowling Green, KY - Western Kentucky University today announced the 2021 finalists of the WKU College of Education and Behavioral Sciences' Distinguished Educator Awards. Finalists include Tammy Dennis, Dale Decker, Dana Soto, and Lorie Estes from Green County, Rodney Smith from Cumberland County Middle School, and Lindsay Gibson from Russell County Middle School.

"While it's hard to believe we're rounding out a year of non-traditional instruction, our teachers have felt every shift and change that came with our new 'normal'," said Corinne Murphy, Dean of WKU's College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. "Our teachers adapted and persevered through every roadblock and moment of uncertainty, showing that education, while considered very traditional in nature, is just as nimble and innovative as the other professional fields that made sharp pivots during the 2020 year. Our teachers incorporated these changes with grace, and we're thrilled to honor them with some well-deserved recognition."

Each award celebrates the individual and significant contributions educators make to the teaching profession. From elementary education to teacher mentorship, WKU recognizes the following P-12 educator finalists based on their inspiring and specialized solutions in the classroom:

Carol Perkins: How my garden grows

Previous Column Freedom is a highway

By Carol Perkins

When you look at your trees, bushes, and flowers, is there a special meaning or story to go along with any of them?

A few days ago, I planted a root from a rose bush from my mother's that came from my grandmother Sullivan, so this rose bush goes back long before me. I also brought home a root from an old-fashioned lilac bush that came from my great-uncle's house. It, too, outdated my birth. I dug up some daylilies that my cousin had set out in my mother's flower bed at least ten years ago. She had brought them from her mother's garden. As they grow, I will think about their origin.

In the process of cleaning up the "fence row" as I described several weeks ago, to have a flower garden, we uncovered one of Jon's "diggers" from when he was a boy. We found a mailbox, bricks, concrete blocks, a sign, and a metal basketball goal that once sat in our driveway until someone backed over the post and down it went.

Over the years, Guy has placed leaves, dried pine needles, fallen tree limbs, and sticks on this bank.

Letter: Clarification on COVID-19 vaccine needed

Gena Grider writes
Clarification is needed on the Covid vaccinations. I was very confused, and found out I'm not the only one, when it says that everyone can get the vaccine. They mean everyone 16 and older. But, in our district (according to the health Dept) we don't have the Pfizer vaccine. Which is the only one approved for 16 and up.

Their company has applied for permission to be used on 12 and up, as of 3 days ago, (CNN website), but obviously too soon to know anything yet. The closest to us that has the Pfizer vaccine is Bowling Green.
