Letter: There should be 2 deputies on every call

Vicki Miller writes:
I completely agree with Vickie Pike's remarks about Sheriff Brockman needing more help/money. He is a very fine man and a hard worker who I'm afraid will overwork himself to the detriment of his health. He always gives his all in anything he does.

It would be great if the county could find funds for more deputies. These people put their lives on the line every day for us. There should be two deputies dispatched on every call.

Letter: Disappointed that Brockman funds taken away

Victoria Pike writes:
I am very disappointed that the money Sheriff Brockman was allowed to keep for use in his office was taken away. I'll say this again, this young man needs help. He's putting in way too many long hours everyday. He needs help to hire additional deputies and the money to pay those deputies so they can stay once they are trained. Also, he needs enough help to be able to send out 2 deputies when the situation is serious.

I call upon our officials to find a way to get him some help and be able to pay them so they don't have to move on to other positions that pay more. These men's lives are on the line here when they go out without backup.

Kentucky Color: Sliced Pound Cake?

By Billy Joe Fudge

Of all the things I ever expected to find in the deep, forested hollars of the Great Wooded South was not, a slice of pound cake! That was the first thing which popped into my mind but possessing the lightning quick scientific mind that I do, I immediately realized that that was an impossibility.

So, as great scientific minds will do, I scratched pound cake and went directly to homemade soap as my next researchable theory. After a sashay through the annals of my most recent experiences with the Art and Science of Boiling Water and Ashes and Grease, I ruled out the slice of homemade soap theory as well.

For those of you who are beginning to enter into the land of scoffers, just remember that there is no failure in the scientific method of trial and error, only the ruling out the unlikely to arrive at the likely. The resulting theory of "likely", was then as obvious as the Green River Knob on a trip to the Somerset Harbor Freight to pick up a set of high quality sockets imported from the Orient; it was a slice of rock!

Now, as to how you come up with a slice of rock in a deep, forested hollar emptying out into the Mighty Cumberland River, just South of the misplaced or misnamed Wolf Creek Dam, is beyond me. Although my string of Doctorates from the Great Wooded South University is impressive and beyond compare, I only minored in geology. Due to this deficiency in the geological sciences, I am going to have to ask for the help of those who might be experts in this field! Real scientists are never afraid to seek help. After all, finding the truth supersedes all frailties of human emotion!

Phillip Coffey - Thoughts of the Sublime

By Phillip Coffey
Loosen my chains, let me calmly walk through the forest.
Soon the infestations of spring will suddenly awaken.
Migrating fouls from the South returning - meet the challenge
Of embracing natures' wonders with liberating sensations.

Ole breezy March still having difficulty with the transition.
In the Plethora - flurries, cool rain, or warmth of the sunshine.
Few moments of pondering - 'just throw them all in altogether.'
Peace now is returning - drifting thoughts of the sublime.
