Remembering Sgt. Dallas Leonard Badger of Knifley, KY

By Pen

On December 7, 1944, Sgt. Dallas Leonard Badger of Knifley, KY, was killed by a sniper on Leyte Island in the Phillipines.

Sgt. Badger was a native of West Virginia, born March 12, 1918 to Cicero "CB" Bethel Badger and Callie Melvina Price Badger. The family had moved to Knifley, KY, some time after his birth. Dallas was listed among draft registrants in the October 30, 1940, issue of the Adair County News, and he was inducted in Louisville in August of 1941. He served in Co. I, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division.

The first news of his death, dispatched on January 11 and 12, 1945--in the form of a telegram and letter from the War Department in Washington--mistakenly listed his rank as Private First Class.

It wasn't until a few weeks later, in a letter sent January 25, 1945, that reports finally filtered back to the family that Badger had been promoted to Sergeant prior to the time of his death.

  • Quarantine for 10 days if you have NO symptoms,
  • Quarantine for 7 days if you have a negative COVID-19 test on or after Day 5 and have NO symptoms.
The deaths we report today are an 80-year-old female from Adair who had been hospitalized; and an 87-year-old female long-term resident from Russell who had been hospitalized.

History Monday: December 7, 1941--U.S. Declares War on Japan

By Mike Watson

The headline on the Adair County News front page for Wednesday, December 10, 1941 read:
U.S. Declares War on Japan
with the heading--3,000 are Reported Killed and Wounded In Hawaii in Surprise Attacks...

Our nation, state and county were now at war with the Axis powers in the struggle that had been building in both Europe and Asia since the beginning of the last decade. Every citizen would be called to combat a global enemy, whether it be in military service overseas or at home, or on the farm, in the factory, or in the classroom, we were all part of this supreme effort. No one who lived during that era would ever forget, nor should we ever forget!

There was a front page appeal from the American Red Cross for funds at once. Eros B. Barger was chairman of the Adair County Red Cross chapter and reported that the national organization was mounting an effort to raise fifty million dollars as soon as possible for present and coming needs. Adair County's quota, based upon population, amounted to $1,750. This would be the first appeal after the beginning of the war, the first of many, and many thousands of dollars would be raised right here in Adair.
