Governor provides Fall Sports update By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Gov. Beshear on Monday said the decision to allow fall sports to resume in the commonwealth comes with a heavy burden of responsibility from school and athletic officials entrusted with keeping student-athletes and others safe. Last week, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) voted 16-2 to allow practices to begin today for the fall sports of cross county, field hockey, football, soccer and volleyball. Regular season games will begin Sept. 7, with football starting Sept. 11. "Let me start by saying we're not going to overturn that decision, and it's not because I think it's a good decision or a wise decision," the Governor said. "But if we're going to defeat this virus, we need people other than me all over Kentucky taking responsibility to make good and wise decisions." Governor provides update on evictions By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Gov. Beshear on Monday issued a new executive order to provide protections and clarity on the issues surrounding evictions during the coronavirus crisis. The Governor suspended evictions as the pandemic took hold. Gov. Beshear said the new executive order protects tenants and provides relief for eligible landlords. "As this battle has taken many months, we now face three major concerns: one, wanting to make sure that people aren't out on the street; two, wanting to make sure that these landlords aren't bankrupted or aren't being treated unfairly; and three, making sure that as people come out of this that they don't have so much debt from their housing situation that they can't ever dig out," the Governor said. "We want a fair system that tries to address all three of these." Under the new order, landlords must give tenants 30 days notice of an intent to evict for nonpayment of rent. During that time, the landlord and tenant must meet and confer on a possible agreement. In addition, no penalties, late fees or interest can be charged related to nonpayment of rent from March 6 through the end of the year. At the same time, Gov. Beshear said his administration is dedicating $15 million of federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money to create a Healthy at Home Eviction Relief Fund. The fund will reimburse eligible landlords for missed rent payments and pay some advance rent to keep tenants in their homes. Feeding KY sources 28K pounds of ground beef for food banks By Sean Southard Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles has announced Feeding Kentucky has acquired 28,000 pounds of Kentucky Proud ground beef from Marksbury Farms for distribution among Kentucky's food bank network. The purchase is funded by a historic donation Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company made to Feeding Kentucky in April of this year as part of the Kentucky Hunger Initiative started by Commissioner Quarles in 2016. "When we started the Kentucky Hunger Initiative years ago, the goal was to build a network to connect farmers and agribusinesses to Kentucky's food bank system," Commissioner Quarles said. "This donation, bolstered by Kentucky Farm Bureau's amazing donation as part of the Hunger Initiative, is the perfect culmination of this work. Kentucky's workers and families are still struggling to recover from the government-mandated shutdown of our economy during COVID-19. Vulnerable Kentuckians affected by this global pandemic will now have more access to food for their families." Letter: Armadillos making their way east Steve Coomer writes: Armadillos are in western Kentucky and making their way east. Letter: Caution about armadillos Marie Freeman writes: After a brief research they've obviously been in Kentucky for over a decade. Especially western Kentucky. During the research I also read where they're having a problem with leprosy in the south from the armadillo. So I would advise nobody touching that and perhaps using some common sense to clean that dead armadillo. Do a brief research and you'll see what I'm saying. It's not really a creature that I am excited to have habitat. The risk may not be real high but it definitely is a possibility.Comments re: A mystery: How on earth? 2020-08-24 10:54:19 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Historic Hurt / Foust House burns down overnight Read more about the history of the Hurt/Foust House: MIKE WATSON: The Fight at Columbia in Which Capt. Jesse Carter was killed Historian Mike Watson reports that the treasured Hurt House/Foust House on Burkesville Street in Columbia burned to the ground overnight Sunday, August 23, 2020. The historic structure was home to former Attorney Ralph Hurt and later his daughter, Pamela Hurt Foust, and her family. Her children sold the property to the Brockman family and they sold it to the City of Columbia to be utilized as a future park. Grant searches have been ongoing for development. The landmark home was known for its Civil War significance. A much talked about battle took place between men from the 1st and 2nd Kentucky Calvary and John Hunt Morgan’s Calvary back in 1863. Some had hoped the home could have been saved as a museum, however, last night's fire resolved that issue for all time. 2020-08-24 08:09:53 | Comments | Printable version
Letter: Armadillo picture Linda Lewis writes: Carson and a saw a dead armadillo, about eight years ago, at Land Between the Lakes. One if the park rangers said that they had moved into the area about three years before that. We also saw multiple dead armadillos, that had been hit by traffic, on Interstate 65 south of Nashville This was about four years ago. We made a joke about then heading for Columbia. Apparently, one of them did get this far.Comments re: A mystery: How on earth? 2020-08-24 08:09:06 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

History Monday: Adair County Church Notes, 1897-1898- By Mike Watson "Stating what was known is often a blessing to those of a later year." Researching, or ferreting out, bits and bites of local and family history is what makes me who I am. It has helped preserve my sanity for many years, and those around me, of course. The recent stay-at-home months have only fed my appetite for more pieces of the puzzles that make us what we are. Here are a few items on local churches from a specific era, as recorded in the pages of the old Adair County News. The Neatsburg church is now in course of erection. The work is being done by Hopkins Bros., who recently built a new church at 'Breedings'. A fine church is being erected here. --10 November & 8 December 1897, Neatsburg letter. Mr. Joel 'Darnold' (Darnell) had singing at Concord Church last Sunday evening. --24 November 1897, Fairplay letter. The church at this place is getting along nicely just now. We have a good Sunday School and Brother Williams to preach for us this year. --19 January 1898, Shilo(h) letter.
