Historic Hurt / Foust House burns down overnight

Read more about the history of the Hurt/Foust House: MIKE WATSON: The Fight at Columbia in Which Capt. Jesse Carter was killed

Historian Mike Watson reports that the treasured Hurt House/Foust House on Burkesville Street in Columbia burned to the ground overnight Sunday, August 23, 2020.

The historic structure was home to former Attorney Ralph Hurt and later his daughter, Pamela Hurt Foust, and her family.

Her children sold the property to the Brockman family and they sold it to the City of Columbia to be utilized as a future park. Grant searches have been ongoing for development.

The landmark home was known for its Civil War significance. A much talked about battle took place between men from the 1st and 2nd Kentucky Calvary and John Hunt Morgan’s Calvary back in 1863. Some had hoped the home could have been saved as a museum, however, last night's fire resolved that issue for all time.
