August 26, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the August 26, 1977, issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included one of dad's favorite stories about asking directions in far western Kentucky, Peggy Brockman's and Jimmy McGowan's birthdays, and the Indians' chances in the upcoming football game against Wayne County. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

I swear this story is true, except for the names.

I was in a small town, in far western Kentucky some years ago and I wanted to get to Walnut Log, a little fishing village on Reelfoot Lake.

I didn't know the directions, so I stopped at a country store.

"Can you tell me how to get to Walnut Log?" I asked the two women behind the counter.

"Naw," said the first. Then, looking at the second, she said, "Can you tell him, Alice?"

The other woman looked confused, "Naw," she said, "I don't know how to get to no place like that. What'd you say the place was?" she asked.

"Walnut Log," I said. "Naw. Naw. I can't help you."

Then I asked them if they could tell me where to go to find out how to get to Walnut Log.

"Naw," the first lady said, "I can't help you. I'm sorry."

As I was about to leave, the first lady asked, "Which way are you headed, anyway."

I pointed south.

"Naw," she said, "I can't help you. I'm sorry."

"Well," I said, "What if I were headed the other direction?"

"Why, that's easy," she answered, "you just go down by the levy, turn left, drive about five miles, and you'll see a sign that says 'Walnut Log'. Take that road and it will get you right there."

I still puzzle over that conversation.

CIS to begin school year with virtual learning

See your school's updated information about open house and registration below

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville Independent Schools' students will head back to school on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 but their studies will now be online through September. Gov. Andy Beshear recently strongly recommended that Kentucky public schools delay in-person classes until Monday, Sept. 28.

CIS Superintendent Kirby Smith discussed the recommendation with Board of Education members during their regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 10. Ultimately, he recommended that all CIS students begin the year virtually. Board members unanimously agreed.

As a result, some changes have been made to upcoming open house and registration events. All CIS students will use the Google Classroom platform for their studies.

Governor's Sunday update: 390 new cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Sunday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"The total number of new COVID-19 cases has increased this week which shows the disease is still very active in Kentucky, but on a positive note it appears that Kentuckians have stopped the exponential growth of the virus," Gov. Beshear said. "Team Kentucky has again shown that if we socially distance, wear masks and wash our hands, we have a better chance of continuing to reopen our economy safely and get more Kentuckians back to school and work."

As of 3 p.m. Aug. 16, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 39,315 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 390 of which were newly reported Sunday. Thirteen of the newly reported cases were from children age 5 and younger.
