ACSO: Positive ID of cyclist involved in collision

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

Around noon today, the Adair County Sheriff's Office learned that a young male from Casey County had been just been reported missing.

Sheriff Chad Weddle of Casey County confirmed to Sheriff Brockman a report that had been filed just an hour or so prior. He confirmed the boy left home yesterday. We were able to make contact with the family, who advised us he would be on a bike and have a large black backpack on. These and other descriptors given to Chief Deputy Justin Cross matched the description of the pedestrian.

The photo taken from a local business security camera was shown to them, and the family confirmed that it seemed to be him.

We directed them to University of Kentucky Intensive Care Unit. We received a call from the family around 6pmCT on Wednesday, August 12, 2020, positively identifying him as 17 year old Avel Vundorin of Casey County.

Vundorin is still listed in very critical condition. We would like to thank the community for all the calls we received today and insure them that we followed up on every one of them. We ask you keep this young man and his family in your prayers.

The case of the reluctant tomatoes

2020-08-12 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
The plan, with 4 tomato plants in the ground just days before the last frost--and then another 4 in the ground to replace those around Mother's Day--was to be over-run with delicious red ripe tomatoes by mid-August, like in those fancy photos from the Farmers Market on the Square.

However, as of August 12, all the 20 or 30 tomotoes on our vines so far are clinging stubbornly to their dreams of a starring role in a Kathy Bates film. If any gardenologists know how to talk to reluctant tomatoes, please use our comment form to send words of wisdom.

Governor's Wednesday update: 1,163 new cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth.

The Governor said he was feeling better a day after he and First Lady Britainy Beshear felt ill and the family was tested for the coronavirus.

"I am happy to report that both the First Lady and I and our kids and everybody that's working around us tested negative for COVID yesterday, but we tried to take every precaution that we would want other people to take," said Gov. Beshear.

Case Information
As of 4 p.m. Aug. 12, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 36,945 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 1,163 of which were newly reported Wednesday. Thirty-nine of the newly reported cases were from children ages 5 and younger.

"I believe today will be our single highest number of positive cases that we've had. Today we've set a record that we never wanted to set, going over 1,000 cases," the Governor said. "Now, if there is good news in this, it is with the number of tests with the seven-day average, our positivity rate is actually down a little bit. But we need to get that much, much lower."

Governor: $6M in CARES funding for area development districts

By Crystal Staley/Megan Armstrong

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced today the Department for Local Government (DLG) has been awarded an additional $6 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act through the Economic Development Association (EDA). Funding will reimburse Kentucky's 15 Area Development Districts (ADDs) for costs associated with the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). Locally, the Lake Cumberland Area Development District and the Barren River Development District will each receive $392,000.

The Lake Cumberland Area Development District serves Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Greent, Russell and Taylor Counties, along with 4 others, while the Barren River Development District covers Metcalfe and 9 other counties.

"Our Area Development Districts are critical parts of our local communities," said Gov. Beshear. "These funds come at a crucial time when we are looking for ways to strengthen our communities and thoughtfully provide new opportunities, while continuing to keep Kentuckians safe. I am confident their guidance and this funding will help our cities and counties develop recovery plans that will help us come out of COVID-19 stronger than before."

CU names Barnett and Lawrence co-campus ministers

By Ariel C. Emberton

Campbellsville, KY - Jasmine Barnett, director of church outreach and FIRST CLASS and adjunct instructor for the School of Theology, and Jamie Lawrence, executive director of ministry and church outreach, have been named the new co-campus ministers at Campbellsville University.

Barnett and Lawrence transitioned into the position in June after the retirement of Ed Pavy, who served as the director of campus ministries for the past 26 years from 1994 until June 2020. After the announcement of Pavy's retirement, the decision was made to bring together Church Outreach and campus ministry as Faith and Community.

The two said they had conversations for several months leading up to the transition on how they could collaborate in a variety of areas. Both Barnett and Lawrence said they work very well together and think a lot alike in ministry. They agreed the partnership was a natural fit.

"I am looking forward to seeing life changes and spiritual growth in our students," Barnett said. "I love the college age student. They are in such a crucial period of their lives, and I truly believe this to be the most impactful time for spiritual molding and mentorship," she said.

Recycling: what's working for others may work here

Charles Marshburn shared the message this morning that “in Germany they give you 25 cents for every can, glass or plastic bottle you recycle.

“It’s a refund of a deposit that you paid when purchasing the item.

“This is just one of the reasons the streets are so clean and a wonderful incentive to recycle. Shouldn’t this be done worldwide?”

Letter: Patch for 522nd Engineer Company, Ft Knox, KY

Mark Bertram writes:
I also have been looking for information on this company,....I was stationed there after I came back from Viet Nam, 1972 was the year...Please...what can you provide me ...I am looking for the shoulder patch of this company, seems a very tuff task to solve...We took care of the float bridge. The patch was not a triangle, my wife sewed all my patches on and don't remember any patch. Did we even have one? I have all patches from all companies I was in but, not this one. I was there for 2 years before I went to Germany, Any thing you have on this would be wonderful. I have even been to the historical office there to no avail. Thank You. --Mark Bertram, malanb1@outlook.com
Mark, thanks for writing. We've gotten this question a few times. Reader Ed Bolton wrote with an answer to the original question. Ed says that the patch was the Armor School patch. We'll try to attach a photo to this article, below, but it's a triangle, which doens't match your question. Hopefully some of our readers may have more information to offer.

LWC releases Action Plan for a safe return to campus

By Venus Popplewell

Lindsey Wilson's A.P. White Campus is beginning to feel like a college again.

That's because 164 members of the Lindsey Wilson College football team began the process of moving back into the residence halls after a five-month absence. The carefully orchestrated and socially distant move-in weekend signifies the start of the 2020-21 academic year.

The 117-year-old liberal arts college has been preparing for this day since March when spring semester classes were moved online in response to the coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak.

Student-athletes began arriving on Friday morning, Aug. 7. Each student-athlete was required to either participate in a 14-day health assessment or provide a negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival.

"We are very excited about the fall semester. We were cut off abruptly last year when COVID-19 was spreading throughout the United States," says LWC President Willliam T. Luckey Jr. "And Lindsey Wilson, like every other college in the U.S., had to send students home and go to remote learning."

A committee consisting of 70 faculty and staff from nine functioning areas of the college have worked together throughout the summer to develop an action plan that details requirements, expectations and new policies related to a safe return to the college's residence halls and face-to-face instructional format.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 08/11/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We are glad to be able to report no new deaths. Our hospitalized cases increased by 2 to a total of 12. We released 14 more cases today as recovered than we added new cases. Our growth rate now projects our total cases to double about every 34 days.

Most of the area public schools have decided to start the school off via a virtual modality. Most of the private schools still plan on going in-person. At least this will allow us to evaluate how quickly COVID-19 will spread in a school setting on a "smaller scale" than if all schools had elected to returned to in-person instruction. We will learn a lot between now and October.

Please help us slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your face covering, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing your hand hygiene, increasing your general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of your face.
