Commentary: Rebuilding unemployment after years of cuts

OP-ED from Rocky Adkins
Senior Advisor to Gov. Andy Beshear

Frankfort, KY My fellow Kentuckians deserve better than an unemployment office that has been starved of funding for years and a system that was designed to tell them "no" when they need help.

On those dark days when Kentuckians have lost their job, they deserve better, and Gov. Andy Beshear is committed to fixing the state's antiquated unemployment system with financial, staffing and geographic challenges that was unable to meet demands brought on by unprecedented claims related to COVID-19.

Gov. Beshear recently announced drastic steps to help Kentuckians and ensure they receive the benefits for which they are qualified, however Kentuckians must know how we got in this situation - the Bevin administration starved the office of resources and funding for years.

Letter on masks: angry, frustrated and scared

Gena Grider writes:
I'm so angry and frustrated and scared. I thought the newest mandate by the governor would surely help and more people would start to wear masks in public.

After going to two different stores on Saturday, I can tell you it doesn't seem to have changed anything. I asked an employee at one store why weren't those people being refused service, he said it's not a law and it was overturned in a court. Some employees didn't even have masks on.

One person with no shirt or mask came up next to me and reached across me to give his money to the cashier!!! How is this ok?? I understand people have a right to their own decisions concerning their own bodies, and I am proud of that fact. But when your decision can possibly kill others, how can there not be more consequences to their actions??

I am a widow in poor health with low immunity and I have two teenagers at home. We have family and friends that would be considered elderly. So we do everything we can to prevent getting COVID-19.

I can understand why businesses won't refuse anyone service, as I'm sure most are struggling. But isn't there anything else that can be done?

Gena

Letter: Show Jelaine's graphic on masks, an eye-opener

Mary Knight writes:
On July 9, you posted an article from Jelaine Harlow of the Adair County Health Department, picturing what happens with , and without, a mask. (Masks make a difference, and now they're required.)

Can you repeat that article a couple of times a day--looking at that graphic is an eye-opener!!! Thank you, Jelaine. One more reason why "Columbia Magazine" is the first key I push when I turn on my computer. - Thanks, Mary
Click here for Jelaine Harlow's graphic Mary mentions which says it all about why wear a mask. And thank you, Mary, for pushing the Columbia Magazine key first thing every day, you just made my morning! - LW

Letter: Rainbow drive through

Maury Lewis writes:
When I came out of Walmart a couple of days ago it was pouring down rain. I got into my car and drove down toward the bypass, I turned right on to the bypass headed toward 55 south.

Out by the animal shelter there was a rainbow coming across the bypass and into a field and I drove through the rainbow - I have never done that before. --Maury
