Letter: CPD Mask Mandate

David Parrish writes:
The CPD message to the citizens of Columbia was not very comforting. It seemed to put the efforts of enforcement on individual business and not the responsibility of the CPD.

KSP: Injury Collision in Casey Co.

By Sergeant Jason Morris

Liberty, KY - The Kentucky State Police investigated a two-vehicle injury collision on KY 49 near Martens Road approximately 10 miles north of Liberty on Thursday, July 9, 2020, around 1:04pmET.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2001 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer being operated by 48-year old Dale Meredith of Horse Cave was traveling South on KY 49 when for an unknown reason he crossed the centerline. Meredith overcorrected causing the load of logs to shift traveling back into the oncoming lane striking a 2013 Chevrolet operated by 27-year old Ida Burton of Liberty.

Meredith and Burton were both air lifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital with severe injuries.

Sergeant Randall Honeycutt investigated the collision, and assisted by Kentucky State Police, Casey Co Sheriff's Office, EMS, and Fire Department.

COVID-19 Precautions

By Joyce M. Coomer

Masks are good. Washing hands is good. Social distancing is good. But... and this is a BIG BUT... until it is explained in excruciating detail that social distancing includes FAMILY and FRIENDS as well as strangers, spread of this virus is going to continue.

Evidently very few people, from comments I overhear and Facebook posts, have any inkling of how pathogens spread -- something I was taught at a very young age by mountain women who had little, if any, formal education. Social distancing MUST INCLUDE your grown children, your parents, your siblings, your aunts, your uncles, your cousins, your grandchildren, and your friends (close or otherwise).

Gathering size has very little to do with the spread of a virus if people are visiting friends and family three or four times a week for several hours at a time. Unless everyone in your extended family and all of your friends and acquaintances work at the same place, shop at the same places at the same time and there are no other people in the stores, you aren't practicing social distancing if you visit family and friends several times a week.

KSP: Troopers Receive Traffic Safety Training Online

By Trooper Robert Purdy

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutors (TSRPs) are pivoting with the times to offer virtual training for law enforcement and prosecutors. Due to COVID-19, the TSRPs transitioned to a virtual format where 'TSRP Tip of the Day' videos are released weekly. KSP Troopers and Officers can now view the training videos from their laptop, electronic device or phone.

The TSRP program is a National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) grant funded program administered through the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety in the Transportation Cabinet and focuses on traffic safety issues. Before COVID, TSRPs Aaron Ann Cole (based at the Kentucky State Police) and Tom Lockridge (based at the Unified Prosecutorial System) taught prosecutors and law enforcement at in-person training's throughout Kentucky. But when COVID came, they knew they had to completely change the way they got their message out. So the TSRP Tips program was born.

Letter: Any update on industrial jobs?

Mason writes:
I know it's only been a week, since myself and hopefully many others, expressed interest and filled out an application for the possible industrial plant opening here, but I was wondering if we can expect and update here at some point? It is a unique and confusing situation applying for a job that doesn't technically exist yet.
