Letter: Tony Rose's comments on the coronavirus

George Kolbenschlag writes:
Adair county is indeed fortunate to have extension agent Tony Rose speaking for and to the young folks of our area. His comments on talking to the youth about the coronavirus pandemic, at least from my skimpy knowledge of the topic, are spot-on.

The vast amount of quality time he spends with the county's 4-H students is also commendable. The local 4-H program has to be one of the best in the state and beyond. --George

Columbia United Methodist Church 15 Mar 2020

2020-03-15 - Columbia - Photo from Screen Shot.
This is what the Columbia United Methodist Church service looked like with Ben and Julie Martin, leaders of the contemporary service, March 15, 2020. The services had been cancelled for the safety of church members during the efforts to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, so this event took place live on Facebook and plans are to repeat it while regular services are cancelled.

Letter: Tests for corona virus

Angie Smith writes:
Do any of the medical facilities in Adair County have test kits to test for this virus? --Angie

The best information we can find right now is that there aren't "test kits" for COVID-19 the way there are for rapid on-site flu and strep diagnosis. Swabs are taken in controlled conditions and then sent to the state lab, under current CDC guidelines.

WDRB posted this article on Thursday: Louisville doctors dish the facts on the coronavirus test

If you have developed a fever or respiratory symptoms and believe you have had exposure to a known case or traveled to an area with community spread, isolate yourself from others in your home and contact your healthcare provider or local health department, or call the state hotline at 800-722-5725, to describe your symptoms and any recent travel before you go to the healthcare facility.

April 18, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below ran in the April 18, 1978 issue of the Adair County News, and also ran in an issue of the Daily Statesman around that time. Topics included the accidental theft of Mayor Downey's Sheaffer pen, a discussion of right-of-way daffodils, and a quote from Beanpole on the success of the Dogwood Project, which had also dominated that week's from page, and resulted in the planting of over 2,100 trees that year. --Pen

CONFESSIONS OF A PEN THIEF
Writing Instruments are community property

I have had a very good friend one time who was the most generous person I ever knew. He would give anyone in need anything he had.

On the other hand, he would want to take anything anyone else had.

Now the world might work better if everyone were that way.

But they are not.

That's why the majority of folks put locks on their meathouses.

I don't feel that everything is community property except in one area: writing instruments.

Kentucky Color: GWSU weighs in on buttercup controversy

By Billy Joe Fudge

Just for your information, Great Wooded South University's most recent research shows a completely different result as a local name for this most prolific, harbinger of Spring, March Lily!

From time immemorial in the Great Wooded South these flowers which appeared during the month of March carried this name. Those which appeared in April and sometimes beyond were called Field Lilies.

Letter: Is this a Southern KY thing?

Diane Wallace writes:
Back home in Upstate New York, we call those flowers daffodils. Buttercups look more like the photo attached. --Diane
Diane, Thanks for writing. Searching Google for "buttercup" shows you to be 99.6% correct. However, searching for "buttercup daffodil" turns up a large number of stock photographers who think daffodils are buttercups, and a number of plant vendors who sell certain bulbs as buttercups.

A quick search of the Columbia Magazine archives puts things at 70% in favor of a colloquial use of buttercup to mean daffodil, 27% for the accepted meaning, and another 22% are certain that it's a pretty good name for a yellow cat.

Letter: Good ole boy system

Cynthia A. Meyer writes:
New taxes? It would be of great help if the county only fixed "County Roads". I have seen many times where driveways have been fixed by this administration and previous ones, blaming it on others rather than taking it upon themselves to admit the "good ole boy" system is not only alive and well, but thriving in Adair County, KY.

We still have not learned anything from the hospital debacle, the county keep wasting money because one hand washed the other. So it only leave one wonder if this attitude of our politicians will make the county will be immune to the Corona Virus- Lord knows we don't have any jobs here? --Cynthia
