Gov. makes appointments to KY boards and commissions

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear made the following appointments to Kentucky boards and commissions.

Gov. Beshear has appointed Sue Dabney, Jim Sidebottom, and Michael McCain as members of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the 11th Judicial Circuit and District of Kentucky. He has also reappointed Blanche Minor as a member.
  • Sue W. Dabney of Mannsville replaces Shelia Newcomb, whose term has expired. She shall serve for a term expiring Jan. 1, 2022.
  • Paul "Jim" Sidebottom of Greensburg, is a farmer at Sidebottom Farm. He replaces Randall Sullivan, whose term has expired. He shall serve for a term expiring Jan. 1, 2024.
  • Michael W. McCain, Jr. of Springfield, is a farmer. He replaces David Carney, whose term has expired. He shall serve for a term expiring Jan. 1, 2024.
  • Blanche Minor of Mannsville is reappointed and shall serve for a term expiring Jan. 1, 2022.

Congratulations to Jackson Dean (6th grader) of Columbia, who competed in the Top Nazarene Talent (TNT) competition for the State of Kentucky, in Bowling Green on January 10 & 11, 2020.

Jack competed in Basketball, Track and Football against middle school and high school students from across the state and was selected to represent Kentucky on the Regional Football team. Jack will travel to Nashville to compete with all other selected KY All-stars from across the state. They will compete against other state teams from the Southeast region of the United States.

Memorial service is Sunday 19 Jan 2020 for Jim Moss

A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 2pmCT at Egypt Christian Church for Jim Moss who passed away at the age of 71. Friends may visit starting at 1pmCT Sunday until time for the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to WINGS of Egypt Christian Church. Envelopes will be left at the church or can be made at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home. Grissom-Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Steve 'Butch' Jewell, 70, Green County, KY (1949-2020)

Steve 'Butch' Jewell, son of the late H.T. and Dorothy Jean Huffman Hiser, was born February 21, 1949 in Hart County, KY and passed away January 11, 2020. He had attained the age of seventy years, ten months and twenty days.

Funeral Services will be held at, Foster-Toler-Curry Funeral Home, 10amCT Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Visitation 4-8pm Tuesday and after 7am Wednesday. Ministers will be Bro. Blake Durrett, Rev. Robert Morris and Bro. Ricky Arnett. Burial will follow in the Green County Memory Gardens in Summersville.

Pallbearers will be: Ryan Jewell, Don Lowe, Christopher Lowe, Austin Lowe, Tim Darnell, Nelson Bishop and Barry Jewell. Honorary Pallbearers: Kloe and Tanner Jewell, Laura Leigh Lowe and Ashley Patterson.

Greensburg fire takes life of 12-year-old Devan Anderson

The young boy who died Sunday morning in a house fire in Greensburg has been identified by the state medical examiner.

12-year-old Devan Alexander Anderson, a student at Greensburg Middle School, was sleeping upstairs in house near the old train depot when the home caught fire. Anderson became entrapped by the flames and perished in the blaze.

The cause of the Sunday morning fire is under investigation by Greensburg Police and Kentucky State Police post 15 in Columbia. Devan Anderson was pronounced dead by Green County Coroner Carol Ray.

Ramona Wheeler Barbee, 80, Columbia, KY (1939-2020)

She was one of the most-loved high school teachers in Adair County and impacted so many lives, retiring after 27 years in the Adair County School System.

Ramona Barbee of Columbia passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at her home. She was 80 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 11amCT on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT, and any time before the service on Wednesday.

Casket bearers will be: William Burton, Tommy Phelps, Tommy Grider, Henry Sandusky, Matt Loy and Chuck Rogers. Honorary casket bearers will be: Larry Legg, Lynn Earl Huddleston, Jack Collins, Dr. Mark Hyatt, Glenn Breeding

New education commissioner is first order for new board

Kentucky is aiming to hire a new education commissioner by June 30 following a national search that is getting underway this week, according to the proposal for a search firm obtained by the Herald-Leader.

Hiring a new commissioner will likely be one of the chief issues in Kentucky K-12 public education in 2020, with the all new state board of education discussing at a Jan. 17 meeting how they will choose a search firm.

KSP: One injured in a single vehicle collision

Campbellsville, KY - Trooper Weston Sullivan is investigating a single vehicle collision that occurred January 11, 2019, at approximately 7:20pmET. Shelby Estes, age 19, of Greensburg, was operating an eastbound 2018 Mazda on Smith Ridge RD 1.5 miles east of Campbellsville on when she entered a curve, swerved to miss a deer that was in her path, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

Estes was transported to Taylor County Regional Hospital by EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

A passenger in the vehicle, Denver Olbers, age 21, of Greensburg, was uninjured. Both occupants were wearing a seat belt.

Trooper Sullivan was assisted at the scene by Campbellsville/Taylor County EMS, Taylor County and Campbellsville Fire Departments.

4-H Cloverbuds Meeting, Tue 28 Jan 2020

The next Cloverbuds meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. The meeting will start at 6pmCT.

Cloverbuds is a program for youth ages 5-8 years old. However, you are welcome to bring younger youth to the meeting.

4-H Summer Camp registration begins March 2, 2020

Notice: Sign-Up For 4-H Camp begins Monday, March 2, 2020. Spots fill on a first-come first-served basis, along with the $50.00 non-refundable deposit. Visit the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, anytime starting March 2, 2020, to secure your spot for 4-H Camp. No sign-ups for 4-H Camp will be taken until March 2, 2020.

County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development

Youth from Adair County can go to camp at Lake Cumberland 4-H Center May 26-29, 2020, with 4-H'ers from Green, Marion and Wayne Counties. The total cost for Camp is $230.00, which includes lodging, meals, etc. Once the $50.00 deposit is made, applicants will receive the 4-H Camp Packet with all necessary camp information.

There are camping spots available for approximately 25 boys and 50 girls. Beginning March 2nd, spots will be filled on a first come-first serve basis once the $50.00 deposit is paid.

Campers will take part in an organized program of activities such as swimming, boating, archery, hiking, crafts, outdoor education, folk games, camp fires, group sports and more. There'll be new friends and you'll learn more about citizenship, leadership, and getting along with others.

Dr. Robert Lee "Bob" Doty of Campbellsville passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. He was 84 years old.

KY worst place to retire?

In a study released this week by WalletHub, Kenutcky comes in dead last in their rankings of best places to retire. According to WalletHub, they compared "affordability, health-related factors and overall quality of life," along with 44 other metrics, to produce their rankings.

At the top of the list, best places to retire were Florida, Colorado, and New Hampshire. You can read more at wallethub.com.

It's currently 35F at the Adair County Mesonet station. Some patchy dense fog has developed early this morning across portions of central Kentucky, especially in river valleys. Be prepared for sudden drops in visibility. Use your low-beam headlights and leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Fog should clear by around 9amCT. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy today, with a high near 56F and light and variable wind.

Rain is likely tonight, with thunderstorms also possible after 3amCT. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 55F by 4am. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph after midnight.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy, with a 50 percent chance of rain. Expect a high near 64F, with southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon.

Several CHS students improve ACT scores, are college ready

Campbellsville High School students are working hard to become college and career ready. Several students improved their ACT scores when taking the exam in December, and, as a result, are now college ready.

Those students include sophomore Abby Turner and juniors Zaquan Cowan, Gideon Richards, Chloe Garrett, Laci Hodgens, Mystique Jones, Taylor Knight and Riley Rainwater.
