Letter: Number of dairy farms in question

Joyce Coomer writes:

I was wondering on my way to work this morning if there is anyone out there who can name all the people who had dairy farms forty years ago from the junction of Highway 55 and Highway 704 to the Fairplay Store -- including the side roads?

There were five that I can remember on Johnson School Road alone -- now only one. - JC

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update - January 2, 2019

Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

As we approach the upcoming legislative session, I have taken note of many of the issues that the people of the 16th District find to be most important to them. One of these topics, which has caused much concern, is the possibility of so-called 'red flag laws' being introduced in Frankfort. I want to reassure you all that I am firmly against any such law being enacted in our commonwealth.

So, what exactly are 'red flag laws,' and why have they become such a prominent issue in the national dialogue? These laws, also known as 'extreme risk protection orders,' allow the temporary confiscation of firearms from individuals who have been deemed to pose a risk to themselves or others. The legislation is designed to fill the void in the law where an individual is becoming increasingly dangerous but has not yet committed any crime.

Carol Perkins: Christmas at the Perkins' house

Previous column: Carol Perkins: Happy New Year

By Carol Perkins

Celebrating Christmas at the Perkins' house happens the week after Christmas, so we have just completed our "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" with Jon and his family and Carla and hers.

Not being accustomed to having anyone in the house except the two of us, the sounds of youth coming from every room and the long discussions among adults were blessings. The kitchen was always bustling with activity because each has special dishes from Frito pie (Noah) to spaghetti (J.C.) to mashed potatoes (Luke) to creamed corn (Eme).

The most exciting gift could have been the crossbow for J.C. When his family moved from Brentwood to Chapel Hill, TN (which is much like Edmonton), J.C. came home one day from middle school and announced that it was bow season. (He has never been hunting.) That prompted the new bow.

Letter: Remembers Rich Dillon at Corner Drugs

Martha Berry writes:
I did not know that Rich Dillon was a pharmacist. My memory of him was at Corner Drugs. When we would stop in there to get a coke after school. Mr. Dillon would come in carrying a brown paper bag. Even though Corner Drug had a fountain, Mr. Dillon brought his lunch and sat in the booth and eat the sandwich that he had brought. I don't remember who owned the drug store at that time, the late 1940s. --Martha

Letter: Someone needs you

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Sue and Gretchen were right on with their advice. That "get up, get out and get happy" was great counsel!

Several years ago, I found myself not wanting to get up and get at'm each morning as in the past. One morning the words, "someone needs you" rang like a bell in my mind and heart. These were not just random words but the title of a song written by my Great Aunt Lucy Parrish. Aunt Lucy was a sister to my Great Uncles Larue and Kay Jessie who most folks around town remember well, my Grandmother Emma Jessie Fudge and the Mother of Cousin Audrey Parrish and of course, Cousin Garon Parrish of the Jeffries' Hardware Employee Hall of Fame.

Aunt Lucy was a great and caring Christian woman and the words of her song who Mary Anna Campbell set to music have continued to ring encouragement into those mornings when I might be feeling a bit like hiding inside the house rather than scouring the countryside for, someone who needs me!

Now, as to your car key conundrum, I have no idea about that which you speak. Mine are always in my pocket, in my vehicle or in their proper place in "my" drawer! --BJF

Seriously, what day is it?!

By Linda Waggener

I don't know about anyone else, but it's really hard for me to keep up with what day it is from Thanksgiving through Christmas and New Years with the holidays popping up and changing patterns of everyday activities.

Today is Thursday, January 2, the first back-to-work day of the new year 2020, and it feels like Monday after a Saturday/Sunday to me. It's enough to make a person feel right blue.

Retired Home Extension Agent Sue Stivers told me years ago that every day we should 'get up, get out, and get happy' - and I think it also included getting dressed up before getting out and about.

To resolve or not: New Year promises and their critics

Did you resolve to do something new or different in 2020?

Making New Years resolutions is a tradition, of sorts, but a much maligned tradition through the years.

In 1908, the Lawrence Weekly World opined that any day would be good for a resolution but since New Year Resolutions were a custom, people should not be 'laughed out of adopting one.'

"Maybe you will be able to keep them. At any rate, you will be better for trying."

More on the Dillon pharmacists

By JIM

George W. Dillon's obituary (Adair County News, Wednesday, April 15, 1930) made no mention of formal education, stating just he "engaged in the mercantile and drug business for 40 years" at Breeding, KY, prior to moving to Columbia in 1922. When Mr. Dillon bought the Columbia drug store that year, the News referred to him as a registered pharmacist. He possibly gained registration via passing a board examination rather than by formal education, as did many of that era.

Rich Dillon's obituary (Adair County News, Wednesday, August 28, 1957) stated he was "educated at Lindsey Wilson Normal School, Beechmont Military Academy, Louisville School of Pharmacy, and the Max Norris School of Pharmacy in Macon, Ga." The obituary made no mention from which pharmacy school he was graduated.

Thank you from J.O.Y. Ministries!

By Maggie Coleman

Well, we have not even finished the campaign period for our annual fund drive, and already we have surpassed our $12,000 goal! The "Brighten Our Community with JOY" campaign has raised $13,100 at the time I write this letter.

That is certainly going to put us on strong footing as we head into 2020 with over a third of our annual budget expenses covered for the year. We will be able to continue the Crisis Resource Center, the emergency shelter known as Cally's House, Mission Week, and the after-school and summer program called Camp HOPE.

We want to thank everyone who donated and also thank those donors who have given regularly since the beginning. We could not do this ministry without you!
