Letter: Smoke in the puffball photo

Jessica writes:
I just have one question. What's up with the creepy smoke/vapor in the pic? --Jessica
Well Jessica, look closely at the blackened Soft Maple leaf, in the attached photo, laying on a carpet of green moss on top of the stump. Just below that leaf is a Puffball with a dented top and a hole in the side. The dent was caused by whacking it with my walking stick and the hole is from where the Smoke of spores puffed forth when I whacked it. That Puffball Smoke is actually multiple millions of spores which will make more Puffballs if they land on rotting wood. In the attached photo, you can see the Smoke of spores starting from beneath my walking stick as I struck the Puffball. --Billy Joe

Grandson/Grandmother email correspondence: chickens

The chicken stories below are between my son, Pen, and my mom, Geniece Marcum, when he was in college and she was learning how to use a little Mac computer he'd set up for her. He helped us both get started emailing. On one of my visits with her, she had me open her email and I couldn't resist asking if I could keep these two notes from their correspondence. - Linda Waggener

Pen to his Grandmother Marcum:

Morris a big city CPA, moves to the country and decides he's going to take up farming. He heads to the local co-op and tells the man, "Give me 100 baby chickens." The co-op man complies.

Crazy path brings Thanksgiving dinner to far Eastern KY

By Linda Blackford, Lexington Herald-Leader

Last Saturday, the main road through Blaine Ky. was choked with parked cars, which is an event in itself because Blaine hardly ever gets crowded any more. The owners of those cars formed a long line outside the God's Hands Ministries, waiting to collect a turkey dinner.

Inside, Rachel Wheeler, who organized the giveaway, prayed with volunteers and Jack Van Vlack, who raised money for 160 boxes of dressing, mashed potatoes, rolls, pie and iced tea: "I'm so thankful for each and every one of you," Wheeler said amid tears. "Now when you put the boxes on the wagon, don't squish the pie and don't squish the bread." Yes, this is a Thanksgiving story.

Clark Co. program aims to reduce animal surrenders

By Lashana Harney, The Winchester Sun

The Clark County Animal Shelter introduced a new tool to help pets find their "furever" homes. The shelter is now one of only about 10 shelters nationwide that is part of the program, called Home To Home.

Director Adreanna Wills said Home To Home allows approved owners to post their pets on Clark County's Home To Home site where potential adopters can view pets like they would view animals in the shelter.

Stamping Ground man builds trains for fun

By Jackie Anders, Georgetown News-Graphic

Driving through the Scott County country back roads surrounding Stamping Ground on any given weekend, the faint but familiar sound of a train whistle can sometimes be heard coming from the hills. It could be you are hearing a whistle from one of Don Saager's custom trains.

The train enthusiast has been building his own scale-model trains for over 25 years now. Saager builds and operates his 1.5:12 inch scale model trains in a shop on his farm. The shop has everything he needs to maintain the steam and battery engines.

Letter: Amazing number of schools

Doug McCammish writes:
Wow! By quick count, that's 150 one- or two-room schools! That's a whole town in itself! Would it be possible someday to plot those on a timeline to see how many existed in any one decade or 20-year span? Was there consolidation? On the same timeline, could it be shown that school C was the consolidation of schools A & B? Huge project! No - I don't volunteer. ;)

Talk about neighborhood schools! The huge number makes it appear that some school would be maybe 5 minute's walk for any child. But we know that wasn't true. Of course the number meant at least 150 teachers also, also not true at any one time. Without being spread out over time, 150 schools just seems impossible. --Doug
