November 26, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the November 26, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included a Thanksgiving miracle at the Keltner house, the trials of being related to a University of Louisville Cardinals fan in Columbia, the trials of actually being a University of Louisville Cardinals fan in Columbia, and the sad passing of Willie Breeding. --Pen

A miracle at the Keltners'
When the Keltner clan gets together on Thanksgiving, the men all go on a hunt in the morning and the women send them off saying, "We'll cook whatever you kill."

Thanksgiving, Dr. Ron Hatcher and son Tommy, David Keltner, Ernest Finn, George Keltner, his brother Carl of Stanford, and Jessie Keltner, took to the fields early. When they returned, Carl had killed one small quail, which he dutifully cleaned and presented for the Thanksgiving feast.

He ceremoniously took the tiny fowl on a napkin to the kitchen to his mother, Mrs. Montra Keltner. Almost immediately, Carl brought the holiday turkey out, uncarved, on a platter.

When Carl presented the large turkey to the weary hunters, he held his hands to heaven, looked up, and said, "Father Dominique, it's a miracle."

UK fans investigating Charles Marshall
Several University of Kentucky fans say they will investigate Charles Marshall, to see if he is really a good daddy, because, they claim, he made his talented and beautiful daughter, Kim, buy a University of Louisville jacket when the young lady really wanted a University of Kentucky one.

November 1944: Adair County at War

To all who have served in the armed forces, a heartfelt thank you.

By JIM

By the time mid-November 1944 arrived, the United States had been involved in the war for nearly three years. Some four dozen young Adair County service men had died, several had been captured and taken as POWs, many others injured in combat or in training mishaps -- and the Battle of the Bulge and some of the worst of the South Pacific bloodbaths loomed large (but mercifully yet hidden) on the near event horizon.

Several items in the November 15 edition of the News dealt with the war.

David Heskamp had been named by F.X. Merkeley, the chair of the Adair County War Finance Committee, to head the Sixth War Loan Drive, set to run November 20 through December 16. The county goal was $250,000. To help jump start the effort, the Committee planned to hold a Bond Rally and Auction on Saturday, November 25. (The quarter million dollar goal, some $3.6 million in today's money, was met and exceeded. At the rally alone, Adair Countians bought up $100,000 worth of the War Bonds.)

Another fund-raising effort, the Adair unit of the state War Fund Drive already had collected nearly $3,000 and expected to receive more. All monies received beyond the goal of $2,600 were earmarked for "erecting an honor board in the Court House yard, listing all Adair men in the Armed Forces."

Other home folks gave to the war effort in a different manner. On the previous Wednesday, no fewer than 261 Adair County motored to Louisville in a 62 vehicle caravan to the Red Cross Center there to donate blood.

Several service men drew mention is edition of the News, including:

CU women's basketball wins 1,000th game

By CU Athletics

Pulaski, TN -- Campbellsville Women's Basketball became only the third program in the NAIA to reach the 1,000-win plateau today when the Lady Tigers defeated Martin Methodist, 91-59, at the Mid-South Conference/ Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge on Saturday night, November 9.

There was no trophy presentation or confetti drop for attaining the program's signature accomplishment -- only the considerable pride in the longstanding success (slightly more than 44 seasons) that it took to get there.

"I have great pride in this program" said coach Ginger High Colvin. "I've been part of some great games and have formed relationships that are lifelong. Coach (Donna) Wise worked hard and did things the right way.

"We strive to continue that. I think the record is a punctuation of years of great players and people coming together for the same purpose."
