Letter: Another sign to straighten

Ann Curtis writes:
Linda, Another sign to straighten! I am guessing this is a State maintained sign, and it would fall to them to fix it. However, maybe someone could clandestinely straighten it, and they would never even notice! #Cheaperthanburyingcables. --Ann

LWC Welcomes the Class of 2023

By Venus Popplewell

The Lindsey Wilson College A.P. White Campus was adorned in blue and white on Saturday as the liberal arts college's faculty and staff officially welcomed members of the Class of 2023.

The 2019 freshman class is made up of more than 500 undergraduate students and includes more than 50 international students; the largest incoming class of international students in the history of the college.

"We have students from a wide variety of countries and we're excited that several new countries are represented this year," said Director of International Programs Sabine Eastham. "We have new students from Greece, Honduras and Colombia and twin sisters from Morocco who will be on the swim team."

One of those new international students is Faith Lucy Kirabo from Kampala, Uganda who follows cousins Ronald Kaluya '10 and recent graduate Derrick Kisita '18 to join the Lindsey Wilson family.

"I'm happy to be at Lindsey Wilson College. I'm most excited about the family I'm going to make here -- everyone is so friendly and nice," said Kirabo. "Sabine (Eastham) is very great as our international advisor. She has been there for us for everything."

Although several hundred students began to move into the college's residence halls earlier in the month, the official welcome ceremony was held Saturday. College officials expect more than 1,100 students to live on campus in 2019-20. That will increase Columbia's population by about 25 percent for the next nine months.

Flags to half-staff today in honor of KY serviceman

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff today, in honor of a Kentucky serviceman who was killed in action during World War II, but whose remains were only recently identified.

Navy Fireman 1st Class Billy J. Johnson, 22, of Caney, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Johnson.

Letter: Sad but true

Mary writes:
I must say, what you are saying is sad but true. As a woman I feel like a step-child in my own state, by my own government. You work for me, placed in office by me. So when did you stop listen to me? When did you Matt Bevin, Mitch McConnell, and Rand Paul stop caring for your state, your people. Do you think I will ever vote for you again? --Mary

Letter: Weakest justice system for abusers

Debbie Sinclair writes:
I really am not at all surprised at this, 19 years ago I adopted my oldest daughter after taking care of her at my job. She was shaken and hurt by her biological father while her biological mother knew this was happening and did nothing to stop it. The abuse began when the child was only days old.

She has 2 dislocated hips, 7 broken ribs, handprints on her chest and a huge knot on her head, all this before she was 3 weeks old. Her father received an 8 year sentence and mother received a 1 Year sentence but yet my child got a life sentence with blindness, cerebral palsy, brain damage, a tracheotomy, feeding tube, seizures and requiring care 24/7. She functions at about a 6 week to 3 month old baby and is 21 and wears diapers.

Father got out in 4 years since he had "good behavior." Mother was out in 6 months. These horrible people were 27 and 24 and probably have had more kids!

Even with all this my daughter wakes up smiling and goes to bed smiling. Kentucky has the weakest justice system in the country so these abusers will continue this abuse because they have nothing to fear. My sweet baby will never get free of her life sentence but yet her abusers live their life as if nothing ever happened. Food for thought. Sorry for the rant but people need to know these things or laws will never change! --Debbie
