October 1, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the October 1, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included development on Jamestown Street, the race for Jailer, a novel idea to boost church attendance, and a nod to the Library Board for the new (now current) Adair County Library. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

A happy man is Aaron Davis, administrator of Adair Memorial Hospital and Summit Manor Nursing Home. Yesterday Mr. Gale Gilbert and Mr. Larry Bloyd of the Department for Human Resources inspected Adair Memorial Hospital to investigate the charges of unsanitary conditions at the hospital leveled by Mrs. Rachel Lea of St. Petersburg, Florida. The inspectors said that the charges were "non-valid and unwarranted." They were happy with what they found.

Third group interested in building shopping center
Two major groups are going ahead with the idea of a Columbia Shopping Center. The Columbia Development Corporation seems to be in the lead at the moment, with plans to develop the Sine Turner property on Jamestown Street. Kermit Grider has been quite active in checking the possibilities on completing the former Doc Walker property on Burkesville and Hudson Streets. Now a third developer, who said it was "off the record," says that if the other two do not get something under way, that he and his partner will build it themselves. And they have the lettuce to do it, between them.

If you vote for Hailey, you get Rachael
Hailey Neagle, the Adair County Jailer, takes a lot of ribbing about how good a jailer his wife, Rachael, is. They'll say, "Hailey, if it were Rachael, I'd sure vote for her." Now he has a stock answer, that, "The only way you'll get her is to vote for me."

Letter: In support of Therapy Dogs

Comments re: ACMS Guidance Counselor Cindy Wells and Charlie

By Mitzi Bault

I could not be happier or more excited to find out about the therapy dogs now in our Adair County School system. It has been proven that therapy dogs can help especially elementary students.

As many know I have been a cancer patient for many years. With my first round of ovarian cancer our family had a wonderful Golden Retriever, Max.

On school mornings before getting sick , I would get up and make a hand gesture to Max and say ' Go get the boys up'. I would point to the stairs and Max would head up stairs to get Jacob and Blake up.

Max would go into each of the boys rooms until he got them up. Max would ride with us to go to school. He loved being greeted by the teachers at Sparkesville. Jacob went from fourth grade to the seventh grade there and Blake third grade to the fifth grade.

After getting diagnosed with Ovarian cancer, Max would lay by my side until it was time for someone to come check on me. If one of my boys would be upset, specifically if I was in the hospital, Max would always help calm them.

Mystery solved: plant is the parasitic vine, dodder

By Wayne Baxter

When I first noticed this plant on July 11, it was just two patches at the shore of Campbellsville's City Lake. I thought it looked like a giant strain of the tiny parasitic vine, dodder, a pest of clover plants.

I learned that is exactly what it is, and by July 30 it occupied a huge portion of that lake's shore line. One theory is that it was developed in a Lab in Knoxville, TN and is being spread by people who think that color should be more prominent in nature. (Research disproved this theory). It is practically impossible to eradicate, so I guess we will have to get used to it. While looking at this plant I snapped a few other pics.
