Epicurean Kentuckian: From Farmers Market to the kitchen table

2019-07-13 - Sano, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
Jackie Montgomery and I met up at the Farmers Market on the Square today and were inspired to go to her kitchen and put a meal together. What a meal it was! By the time we finished, the menu included spicy fried chicken; oven grilled sweet potatoes, patty pan squash and onion drizzled with olive oil and lightly seasoned with smoked Paprika, ground Coriander and chili pepper; red cabbage slaw; local scrambled eggs with scallions and garlic; and slices of extra ripe purple tomatoes. Almost everything was from either the Farmers Market on Campbellsville Street or the Farmers Market at the Extension Office on Fairground Street. -- LW

KYTC diverts eastbound Bluegrass Parkway for bridge repairs

By Chris Jessie

After inspection and analysis of the bridge over Beech Fork, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will be closing both eastbound lanes between Mile Markers 21-25 on Saturday, July 13th. The closure is in the best interest of safety for motorists and will reduce physical stresses and impacts to the structure until repairs can be made. KYTC is in the process of signing detour routes and should be ready to implement the closure around 9amET

Motorists except for truck/commercial traffic will detour Exit 21 (Bardstown) at US 31E to US 62 to US 150 and rejoin Eastbound Bluegrass Parkway at Exit 25. Truck/commercial traffic will detour via I 65 to KY 245 to US 150. Crossovers will be built as soon as possible to divert eastbound traffic to the westbound side. The described detour will remain in place until crossovers are constructed.

Beshear continues Prescription Drug Prices investigation

By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Andy Beshear announced today his office is moving forward with an investigation into inflated prescription drug prices by submitting a request for proposal (RFP) to bolster his legal team.

In March, Beshear launched an investigation into pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), who control the prescription drug market for several state programs. It is alleged that PBMs have overcharged the state health insurance programs for prescription drugs and discriminated against local pharmacies. Beshear seeks to recover any profits improperly retained by PBMs at the expense of the Commonwealth and its taxpayers.

Beshear said the RFP, competitive bid process will result in his office hiring additional resources in the most efficient manner, where the winning bidder receives no upfront state tax dollars and attorneys are only paid a set portion of any monies awarded in a civil action.

Bevin backs legislation prohibiting 'Sanctuary Cities'

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - On Friday, July 12, 2019, Gov. Matt Bevin joined state lawmakers, members of the Lexington Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and Homeland Security officials in Lexington to call for passage of legislation sponsored by Sen. Danny Carroll and Rep. John Blanton that prohibits local governments from enacting "sanctuary" policies that prevent local law enforcement from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In recent months, politicians in some Kentucky communities have proposed these policies that discourage partnerships between local police and federal officials. State and local governments in states like California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Rhode Island, and Connecticut have already adopted "sanctuary" policies.
