Summer learning at ACES Camp SAFARI

By Debbie Cowan

It may be summer-time but the doors at Adair County Elementary School (ACES) have been open to students the past two weeks for Summer Camp SAFARI. While the mornings have been reserved for reading, math and science class, each afternoon has been filled with a wide variety of activities designed for good, old-fashioned fun.

Students have enjoyed magic shows, a martial arts demonstration and a visit with snakes and other reptiles. They have practiced bicycle safety and enjoyed time outside each day.

Their culinary skills have been challenged as they learned how to make cupcakes and solar powered s'mores ovens as well as home-made ice cream. Art classes have offered students the chance to be creative and learn printmaking.

Working cooperatively while thinking independently, campers have conquered challenges and worked on essential skills such as communication, problem-solving and leadership.

William Douglas Merritt, 64, Nashville, TN (1954-2019)

Doug had a passion for helping others, and never met a stranger he couldn't make laugh. He was an avid coffee drinker and a die-hard University of Kentucky fan. His quick wit, kind and compassionate spirit, and infectious smile will be sorely missed.

It is with great sadness that the family of William Douglas "Doug" Merritt announces his passing after a long-term illness on Friday, June 7, 2019, at the age of 64.

A private service will be held for family members only.

Fiscal Court votes 5-2 in favor of Sunday alcohol sales

By Tiffany Kessler

Three years and several attempts later, a surprise motion made during Tuesday night's regular fiscal court meeting resulted in the passage of county-wide alcohol sales on Sunday.

During the "Other Business" portion of the meeting, Magistrate Chris Reeder addressed the topic because he says business owners have been contacting him.

"It doesn't make a difference to me personally," Reeder said to the court, "but I have business owners and there are more of them coming. It's not a matter of selling alcohol, it's now a matter of who is going to get the revenue from it."

Parnell Commercial Driving School opens at Mister P

By Linda Waggeneer

The Mister "P" Express family is proud to announce the opening of the Parnell Commercial Driving School, a certified CDL program and commercial driving school. The state-of-the-art training center on its 35-acre campus in River Ridge, Jeffersonville, IN, will allow for up to a hundred students at a time.

Adair County native Allan Parnell, founder and chairman of Mister "P" Express, and his daughter, President and CEO of Mister "P" Express, Cynthia Parnell Collier, started the driver training school in 2006 and as it grew, they determined the training school would expand to fill a need in the trucking industry market.

Their statistics show a driver shortage across America that numbers a hundred thousand jobs going unfilled for the lack of certified professional, safe drivers ready to move merchandise.

Beshear calls on Kentuckians to recognize, report elder abuse

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, is a chance to raise awareness, protect seniors from abuse.

By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Andy Beshear is calling on Kentuckians, organizations and communities to join his office in raising awareness of senior abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Kentuckians are urged to observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, by learning how to properly recognize and report the crime.

Beshear said it is shameful that every year, across the country, an estimated one in 10 elderly Americans are victims of abuse.

"Ahead of this year's Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I ask Kentuckians to take time to help us stop senior abuse by learning the signs of abuse and how to report it," said Beshear. "One report, one phone call can help save a senior from financial ruin or possibly save their life."
