Kentucky Color: Peak Color Alert

By Billy Joe Fudge

In recent weeks the Cumberland Parkway Kaliedoscope of Color from Columbia to Glasgow has been composed primarily of edge trees. Edge trees such as Sassafras, Sumac, Dogwood, Black Gum, a few Maples and Poplars, among others and located especially from Columbia to Edmonton.

Deep oranges, reds of innumerable hues, a plethora of purples and yellows against a backdrop of mature forest trees of green and highlighted by the interspersed black greens of Eastern Red cedar, have been mind-blowingly enjoyable.

Right now however, the event has morphed from edge trees to almost exclusively, nuanced yellows of mature Maples, Hickories, Elms, Poplars, some Oak and Sycamore. Although the entire drive is beautiful, the jaw-dropping display of color at present is from Edmonton to Glasgow.

Building relationships that last a lifetime

By Sabine Eastham, Director of the International Student Programs at LWC,
and Gintare Mackeviciute, Jonava/Lithuania, former student at LWC

When Gintare came to the U.S. and LWC in August 2016, she was paired with a host family: Bonnie, Lane, Sara and Jonathan Barnes, from Russell Springs, KY. The International Student Programs (ISP) matches international students with area families who are willing to host the students during the school year. Quickly, they became a huge part of Gintare' s life and support system in the U.S.

In the summer of 2018, Gintare made the decision to transfer to the University of Tennessee to continue her education. However, as it is with most host families and members of the LWC community, they are still staying in touch with "their" students, as they are building relationships that last a lifetime!

Letter: Memories of Wheeler Holler

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Horses are able to rotate each ear about 180 degrees. It appears that this one is listening in on two conversations at the same time. I would suppose it would be hard to sneak upon a horse.

My favorite memory down in Wheeler Holler is a monkey riding bareback on an Airedale who was on a dead run down through the woods. That monkey had a death grip on the Airedale's collar and was dodging limbs and bushes like his life depended on it. It reminded me of Mohammed Ali dodging and head-weaving to avoid Joe Frasier's murderous hooks.

Great pic by the way! --Billy Joe

"Many people think agriculture is just about farmers, but it's all around us. Everyone eats three meals a day, but so many of those people don't have any idea where their food comes from."
