OCC National Collection Week is November 12-19, 2018

Click headline for collection week drop-off schedules for this year's Operation Christmas Child

By Mark Fudge

The Columbia First Church of the Nazarene, Wheet Fellowship Hall will once again serve as the collection site for Operation Christmas Child, the worlds largest Christmas project of its kind.

The annual Samaritan's purse project is a favorite of many Adair County residents, families, churches and groups who spread the joy to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with a wow item--like a doll or soccer ball--other fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items, other items as well as notes of encouragement.

"Through the simple act of filling a shoebox, someone in Adair County can make a tangible difference in the life of a child halfway around the world. Anyone can participate and bring joy to a child facing difficult circumstances," said local volunteer Denise Fudge, who has participated in Operation Christmas Child for many years.

SOCKTOBER Results

By Laura Marcum

After fall break, our school held a new sock drive to help support our Family Resource Center. If students brought in a new pair of socks to donate then they could wear crazy socks to show everyone they participated.

The class from each grade level bringing in the most socks received an ice cream party. The overall school winner also received a "sock hop" dance party. Overall our school received a total of 1,254 socks.

Grade level winners included:
  • Kindergarten: Julie Cowan's class with 150 pairs,
  • 1st Grade: Tabitha Giles' class with 169 pairs
  • 2nd Grade: Christina Burton's class with 79 pairs of socks
Mrs. Giles' class won the most donated socks overall. Way to go ACPC! Special thanks to Cara Embry, a Lindsey Wilson College student-teacher who helped organize and promote this project.

Letter: please revisit this picture and the good memories again

Richard Robertson writes:
Today, Face Book asked me if I wished to share this memory of a successful, bountiful, and memorable cider pressing in 2012, which I'd also shared with Columbia Magazine. The people of Columbia and Adair County have an uncountable amount of memories, of the long lived people in this photo. I'd like to ask the community to take note of the photo again, hoping it will prompt pleasant memories of those pictured. The three folks in the middle of the picture are no longer with us: Mrs. Pelly, Edgar Holmes (A veteran of 2 foreign wars!), and Margarete Perkins. Sam Pelly is now a centurion and Buck Perkins, still driving, occasionally stops by the old place when he goes to visit Margarete, who lies in rest at nearby Mt. Carmel Cemetery. I think Buck's visit to see Margarete are frequent. Buck tells me that after 73 years of marriage, the physical disolvement of their union is a hard burden to accept.
