Historic building on Burkesville Street burning to the ground By Linda Waggener A historic Adair County building burned overnight and is still smoldering at 409 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY. The building had been a site of local businesses for many years - the Meadow Hill Inn having been one very popular one, then Walker Florist. It was occupied in recent years by Sign America. The Adair County Fire Department was called out about 11:30pmCT and 17 men fought the blazing building for four and a half hours. Chief Mike Glasgow said they felt it was under control as much as possible around 3:30amCT and they left it to burn itself out - he felt it would probably continue to smolder all day. He said he had not ordered any fire fighters inside the burning building on arrival because of the known dangers to their safety. He has no idea of the cause of the fire, it will remain under investigation. He did feel if the Fire Department had been called even ten minutes earlier they might have been able to save the building. More details will be provided as received.
