Historical detective work on the location of L.M. Young's soda fountain and ice cream parlor (later the Royal Cafe), 1916-1938. JIM has now located it. You have to read the full article for the answer. Test yourself to see if you knew. I didn't, but the answer was my second guess - ED WAGGENER

Query: What business occupies the 1916-1944 Coffey Building?

By Jim

The building to which reference was made as the Coffey Building in the Royal Cafe article was put up at the same time as the Jones Block, now occupied in the main by Red Brick Studio, and the Conover Hotel, remembered now as the New Adair. At the time construction began in the spring of 1898, the firm of Coffey, Hughes & Nell (J.N. "Newt" Coffey, E.H. "Ed" Hughes, and George Nell) held ownership. In November 1898 or thereabout Mr. Nell sold his interest in the firm to the other two partners and within weeks, James Johnston (better known as J.J.) Hunter joined and the firm's name was styled as Hughes, Coffey & Hunter.

What if Start of School were day Paz Holley goes over the top?

Goal could be reached any hour, any day now. . .

ColumbiaMagazine.com staff, with a breakfast time reminder

The Countdown for the Start of School is now just one day away. The Paz Holley Project is now within $13,391 (as of August 6, 2018). Wouldn't it be great if the Paz Holley Project goal of $108,000 for the purchase price of the Paz Holley House were announced on the same day? Or better yet, sometime today?

What if just 134 people were to contribute $100 each today? That would put Paz-Holley over the goal line.

To help with the Paz-Holley Project contact any one of the committee members that follow: Paz-Holley Project Chairman Rick Wilson 270-378-1490, Treasurer Maggie Coleman 704-281-3055, Robin Lewis 270-250-5299, Troy Grider 270-250-3523, Dennis Loy 270-634-1429, Jane Reed 270-805-9183, Sarah Dean 270-634-2204, Marian Grant 270-378-1782, Danny Fudge 270-634-0727 and Stacey Wilson 270-250-4798.
