Trees of Kentucky - Big Leaf Magnolia in Adair County?

2018-05-20 - Valley near Russell Creek, District 2, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed & Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Linda spotted this tree as we passed, discussed it and went too far to back up. As my policy is that we never go back, this was a "Go Back" op, even for me. After spending one half hour searching, I think it is a Big Leaf Magnolia. The distribution maps indicate Adair County would be on or near the very northern tip of its range. It appears either ready to flower or has just done so. If we can find the location again, we'll want to see it in bloom. Anyone an expert on this understory tree? - EW

Kentucky Color - False Solomon's Seal

Click on headline for introduction with photo

By Billy Joe Fudge, President, Homeplace on Green River

There is an old proverb which should make False Solomon's Seal feel a bit better: "The name of a thing does not matter as much as the quality of the thing."

I can honestly say that I agree completely, but I can't imagine being saddled with the name "false."

I dug one False Solomon’s Seal about 20 years ago on Jabez Ridge, brought it home and now I have several growing ‘neath the Loblolly canopy behind our house. - Billy Joe Fudge
