Chili fundraiser helps ACHS Academic Team fund D.C. trip

The Adair County High Academic Team has qualified for national competition in Washington, DC this summer! Please come support them next Tuesday, February 6, from 5pmCT to 6:30pmCT in the ACHS cafeteria, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. There will be a $5 meal that includes a bowl of chili, dessert, and drink. While there, you are invited to bid on some really nice auction items. All proceeds go toward the team's trip to national competition. - Keri Willis

After the mid-January snow a couple of weeks back, roads were cleared but freezing temperatures meant the snow blanketed the landscape for a few more days. This picture-postcard scene looking toward downtown Glens Fork, KY shows the hills and sky of winter in afternoon sun. At the bottom of the hill we had a choice of turning left on Hwy 55 South Road and going to Lake Cumberland in Russell County, or turning right and heading home to Columbia. The warmth of home won out on January 16, 2018. - LW

Corbin man found guilty of devising murder-for-hire scheme

US Robert M. Duncan, Jr., Attorney Duncan; Stuart Lowrey, Special Agent In-Charge, ATF; and Commissioner Rick Sanders of the Kentucky State Police, jointly announced the jury's verdict. Sentencing scheduled for May 30, 2018.

U.S. Department of Justice, Eastern District of KY

LONDON, KY - (Wed 31 Jan 2018) - William Timothy Sutton, 55, of Corbin, KY, has been convicted of four counts of interstate murder-for-hire and one count of possession of firearms by a convicted felon. The verdict came yesterday, following six days of trial, which included testimony from all four intended victims of the scheme. The jury deliberated for less than two hours in reaching its verdict.

The evidence at trial established that, in March of 2017, while incarcerated in the Whitley County Detention Center, Sutton offered to pay a fellow inmate forty thousand dollars ($40,000) to murder the Whitley County Attorney, the Whitley/McCreary County Commonwealth's Attorney, and two ex-girlfriends.

KSP Post 15 issues January Activity Report

Year starts with 3 traffic deaths in January vs. none in January 2017. Two of the fatalities were in Taylor County, one was in Clinton County, KY.

COLUMBIA, KY - (Thu 1 Feb 2018) – During the month of January 2018, there were 9 traffic accidents investigated by the State Police working in the Post 15 area in the 11 counties of Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Marion, Metcalfe, Monroe, Russell, Taylor and Washington.

There were three fatal collisions during the month of January in the Post 15 area.

KSP Post 15 to conduct Safety Checks

Will be check for impaired drivers, use of safety restraints for children

KSP Post 15, Columbia, KY

COLUMBIA, KY (Thu 1 Feb 2018) – Kentucky State Police, Post 15 will be conducting safety traffic checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Washington, Marion, Taylor, Green, Casey, Russell, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton and Cumberland. Troopers will be checking for impaired drivers, children that are not properly restrained in child safety seats and informing the public about the use of seatbelts. These safety checkpoints will be conducted in various locations throughout the Post 15 area that are experiencing a high ratio of vehicular crashes resulting in injury and/or death compared to relatively low safety restraint usage ratio.

ACMS Academic Team is 2nd in District Governors Cup

The Adair County Middle School Academic Team took home second place honors in District Governor's Cup Competition on Saturday, January 20, 2018. The competition took place at Campbellsville Middle School where the team earned second place in Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving Team Events as well as District Runner-up in overall competition.

Ruth Halcolm, Taylor Co./Rockcastle Co., KY native (1939-2018)

She was native of Rockcastle Co., KY, and a resident of Taylor County, KY, at the time of her death. She was a professed Christian, and a member of Elk Horn Baptist Church. She had a long career and retired as a supervisor from H. Bartle Sewing in Richmond, IN. She was the daughter of the late Ted Allen & Dona Hale Allen. With her passing, three siblings survive of her 15 brothers and sisters. She was the widow of John Halcomb, her husband of 43 years.

Competent, timely snow removal doesn't go unnoticed

Little House of Fabrics owner Kathy Jones sends letter to City Hall. Mayor Hardwick said credit should go to Street Superintendent Donnie Rowe, who in turn gave due credit to Tim Smith and Roger Coffey, the Columbia Police Department and Adair County EMD Mike Keltner and others, for now to do most effective work making streets safe. It's all a matter of timing, Rowe says.

Almost with failure, failures and shortcomings receive numerous complaints. Too many times, outstanding performance and competence goes unnoticed. But Columbia business owner Kathy Jones, was prompted to write a letter to City Hall commending the work of the Columbia Street Department during the January snowstorm. She's not in the City Limits, but couldn't help but acknowledge their work. Her letter, which went to City Hall and Mayor Hardwick, is posted as a photo linked to this story.
