Of ring tones and remotes and candy bins on the square

Celia Downey writes:
One does have to be "up in years" to get mixed up, Linda. I work extensively with technology everyday. Recently after coming home I called my mother but got no ring tone. I waited and waited, finally looking in my hand, I realized I had used the TV Remote to call her. Of course no connection. So I reached for the Smart Phone....
(Response to When dialing doesn't work)

Re Nell's Variety, in 1973 we moved to Columbia and I loved Nell's Variety Store. My sister Sheri and I walked to the Square to shop there. We loved looking in the bins of stuff on display. It was different than the K-Marts in Nashville, and the people were nice to us. -- Celia
(Response to Remembering Nell's Variety Store
Celia, we share those experiences -- I remember how wonderful it was walking into the store with lighted candy bins, and confess, as Debbie Sinclair did in her note, to investing quite a sum of my meager income on those maple nut goodies. They are sold in packs today, but the taste doesn't match the taste of those under the warming light which were bagged from the big metal scoop on the spot. Thanks for writing! -- Linda Waggener

KY Afield Outdoors: Excellent winter fishing at Cumberland

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - Consistency is a trait all anglers love in a body of water. Most lakes and rivers in Kentucky go through seasonal temperature swings that make fishing tough during the hottest and coldest months of the year.

The Cumberland River below Lake Cumberland fishes as consistently as any body of water in Kentucky. The water temperatures of the Cumberland River at Burkesville ranged from 55 degrees Dec. 11 to 53.5 degrees Dec. 14 to around 53 degrees Dec. 18.

"There is no reason not to do well in winter on the Cumberland tailwater as the water temperature is pretty controlled by Wolf Creek Dam," said Ron Brooks, director of Fisheries for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "The fall and winter are the best time of year for big trout. As long as it is not too cold to be outside, anglers should do well."
