Guardian of the Porch! - A primitive scene at its best. This handsome rooster sits proudly at the Steve Breeding residence on the front porch of an old log cabin on Cane Valley Mill Road. Since I'm a big fan of primitive and all things country I just had to try to compose a shot centered around this colorful guy. - Robert Ellis Photo Robert Ellis (c)

Four cases of West Nile Virus Reported in KY

Cases in three Kentucky counties, have been reported. There are no medications to treat, or vaccines to prevent West Nile virus infections in humans. People with milder illnesses typically recover on their own, although symptoms may last for several weeks.

By Doug Hogan/Beth Fisher

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) is reporting four human cases of West Nile virus infection in Kentucky residents.

To date, 42 states and Washington, D.C. have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, mosquitoes, or horses in 2017. Kentucky's four human cases include residents of Fayette (1), Hopkins (2), and Jefferson (1) counties. All cases have occurred in adults.

In most instances, people infected with the West Nile virus either show no symptoms or relatively mild symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Less than 1 percent will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues). People over 50 years of age and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and organ transplants, are at greater risk for serious illness.

Very reliable source sends information on Hick's Restaurant

Anon writes:
Just a bit of information about Hick's Drive-In: In "Lost Restaurants of Louisville," authors Stephen Hacker and Michelle Turner note that Daynon Hicks opened Kupie's eatery "near the corner of Fifth and Walnut Streets around 1940." They also stated Mr. Hicks married Mary, a young waitress at Kupie's, in 1947, and "Two weeks after they were married, Daynon Hicks opened Hick's Drive-In in Shiveley. " Hacker & Turner go on to say that Mr. Hicks continued to operate the Drive-In for "several years" after selling Kupie's in 1950. --Anon
