Nancy Grigsby: Organic agriculture deserves respect

By Nancy Grigsby

What good are organic certifications and signs when they are ignored? The care and effort that go into having a property that is "organic" is something to be proud of and treasure, not only by the owner but by society in general.

It deserves respect, not ridicule and animosity or defiance. Thank you for making the public aware of the struggle we wage against toxic chemicals in our soil, air, food, and water. - Nancy Grigsby

Celia Downey: Luncheon with friend; lessons learned

By Celia Downey

Have you eaten lunch with your best friend? Always a pleasure, discussing the menu and wishing you could eat it all. At home on my day off there was no menu, no fancy little glass plates, and no iced tumblers on a covered table.

However, there was some cheese and bread plus mayo and a few stale Lays chips. Good enough, cheese sandwich and chips, plus a Diet Coke in the can. Sitting down on the back porch step, I took the first bite of the sandwich. Such a lovely day with the sun streaming down and the birds peeping around. Anticipating the lunch I began to take a bite.

Joyce Coomer: Glass recycling

Joyce Coomer writes:
Once again . . .

Several years ago, the Lexington Herald-Leader had an article about a grass crusher/tumbler that the state owned. It could be taken to different counties, as they requested or needed it. Tumbled glass could be used as a landscaping item and the county could sell the tumbled glass by the pound.

I know first-hand that broken glass has an interesting effect in a flower bed. Ten or fifteen years ago, the back glass in the camper top had somehow gotten broken (and I didn't realize it), and when I opened the back glass to get something out of the bed of the truck, the pieces fell out into my March flower bed. I didn't bother picking it up as it was safety glass, but noticed that it glinted nicely in sunshine and even in moonlight.

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed there were still several pieces of the glass visible around the March flowers, and it was a nice contrast to the leaves from last fall.

Perhaps the judge's office could question someone in Frankfort about this machine. - Joyce M. Coomer

Adair Solid Waste looking to Pulaski Co. for glass recycling

Related: Letter to CM from Guy Babin : Where can you recycle glass in Adair County?

Guy Babin forwards the following rapid response to his email, from AC Deputy CJE Andrea Waggener, dated Wednesday, August 16, 2017

"Mr. Babin, Unfortunately, glass recycling is an expensive process and the vendors we used in the past have stopped accepting that material. We have been unable to find a different vendor capable of taking and processing glass. Additionally we have a storage issue at the Recycling Center. There isn't much space there to collect large quantities of heavy glass while housing full loads of cardboard, newsprint, and shredded paper.
