Spider Lily on Wall Street, Columbia, KY

2017-07-17 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
I don't like spiders, but I really like this delicate, lavender Spider Lily plant. The photo was made on Wall Street this week after a heavy rain brightened everything up. If you were in a plane, heading over the blue hills in the background would get you to Betty's O.K. Country Cooking. - LW

In Memory - Happy 119th Birthday, Edith Pearl Chelf Beard

Diane Cowden writes to her family members:

You all have probably already thought of it, but it's July 17, which will always be Grandma Beard's Birthday. Since she lived to be 98, we had so many birthdays with her, it doesn't seem right not having a party for her today. If she was here, she would be 119 today. I think we all probably had the best Grandma out there. Never saw her get really mad or angry at anyone; she never complained even when she was blind and couldn't walk, and I really never - my whole life - heard her say anything bad about anyone - seriously. She had the best couch on which to lie down and take a nap in front of that fire and she made really good vegetable soup and homemade butterscotch candy. We miss you Edith Pearl and hope you are having a grand birthday in heaven with Grandpa, Daddy, Louis, and Dean, Lee Roy & Nettie, and all your brothers and sisters, Audrey, Stella, Hallie, Ruby, Marshall, James, Paul and Hazel.
- Love, Diane

Shannon Sexton: Kayaking is the thing to do now, but . . .

Personal Commentary

Kayaking! It's the thing to do in Adair Co. right now and I'm sure across the country.

We have some great Kayaking routes here in Adair Co. - even in the city limits or so I hear from the "locals". I'm thinking about buying one myself which made me wonder...

JIM: Henry Giles first Spout Springs Column - 5 Jun 1957

It was sixty years ago June 5 that the wonderful column, "Spout Springs Splashes," began. It tells of the transition (from urban life in an upstairs apartment on E Guardian Street in Columbia) back to Spout Springs, KY. Of that move, Henry Giles said: 'Can't recall a rougher day spent during some over five years in the Army Engineers.' Slightly edited, that first column appears below.

By Jim

The June 5, 1957 edition of the Adair County News carried Henry Giles' first "Spout Springs Splashes" column. An introductory piece on the front page stated the writings would "deal in homespun philosophy and such things as come to the writer's mind" and noted that Mr. & Mrs Giles had removed from Columbia to the Knifley country just a week earlier.

The author, with a bit of self-effacing humor, added a second headline to his musings, referring to them collectively as "The most Inadequate and Unnecessary Column ever Published."
